That was a big un
Roll cage stood up well, good to see

Proby - 1/7/12 at 07:09 AM

Crikey, that was nasty. That roll cage did seem to stand up well, I'm glad to see the driver seemed safe & sound. It's the first time I've seen a video of a seven rolled.

TimC - 1/7/12 at 07:25 AM

Holy smoke!

ReMan - 1/7/12 at 07:41 AM

Yea that's nasty, glad he's Ok could have been a lot lot worse.

scootz - 1/7/12 at 08:44 AM

Ouch!

Wadders - 1/7/12 at 09:06 AM

Love the commentary, calm as you like...... "and he seems to have come to an abrupt halt"

Been thinking of a full cage for ages, it's now top of the list Great to see him walk away, looked like an oldish bloke
bet he was aching for a few days after that.

Al.

Good to see him walk out.

Caterham full cages do work extremely well. This guy "only" broke an arm.

zilspeed - 1/7/12 at 10:22 AM

I'm sure that's the same bit where Graham Hickman very nearly lost his life in the Jordan F1 car.

He lived, but with serious injuries.

cerbera - 1/7/12 at 10:39 AM

Yikes!!!

Westy1994 - 1/7/12 at 01:26 PM

It was Mr Hickman Zilspeed, I was trying to remember the guys name after I saw that video and thought the same as you, IIRC it was an old F1 car modified for hillclimbing, i think it may have been the cars first season as well as they were adapting it for the narrow tracks that our hills have.

Also a post by the driver of the above video reports it may well be the last run he does.

" Unfortunately, it was driver error!! Too much speed!!
Having just looked at the split times, I see that I was over three tenths quicker to the "Crossing" split time that I've ever been before, and 0.07sec quicker than Tom had just done.
Unfortunately, runs like that do not come without taking a few risks....

I think the time has arrived where I'm no longer prepared to take those risks, so it's very likey that yesterday was my last competitive outing."

As seen on the L7 forum.

I have been sideways at that point myself, but fortunately the outcome was just a simple spin into the outside banking, does made you wonder why the owners have not modified the inside bank to reduce the ' launch' situation.

Wow. Glad I'm adding a hoop and bracing now. It also makes me glad of the hardwood layout. Lots of room to run off (which I have done a few times).

Correct. I was stood on the bank at Crossing when he did it. Very eerie moment it was, as the car was inverted and ran at full revs for a couple of seconds before cutting out, then absolute dead silence, just the echo of the engine down the valley...
Of course, the irony was that it was the last run of the day and he already had FTD.

I am re-assured that I just spanked a load of cash at Caged on my Stylus!

a lot of people are going for arm-restraints as well now, and I intend to. They should be have enough to get free travel for the steering wheel, gear stick, etc, but will keep your arm in the open cockpit in case it all goes a bit blue-danube-waltz.

owelly - 2/7/12 at 12:10 PM

I find it odd that open-cockpit car drivers have to have arm restraints for drag racing, but not other forms of motorsport. I hate the things but when you see arms flailing around after/during a crash, they make sense!

Cant see the video at work, but the photos alone look very 'impressive' as said, vary glad to hear he survived it with seemly little side effects.

Almost a week old that story, and here was me saying I get my news from the internet because it was instant !!!.

vanepico - 5/7/12 at 06:33 PM

Shelsley walsh is always good to go and see, I've got a picture of the air ambulance landing there when someone had an accident, i think it was the 2009 one.

mackei23b - 5/7/12 at 07:29 PM

Yes, it was a big one, almost identical to another 7 two years ago.

Glad Richard is OK, he's a really nice chap, his son I believe got the class record in the previous run as a shared drive.

Cheers
