I had lost confidence after all the recent reports of leaking plastic tanks so, although mine hadn't leaked, I decided to replace it with an aluminium one.

I fitted the nice shiny new one, started to fill it and noticed a steady drip from the base... the culprit was a tiny pinhole in a weld.
I got in touch with Bryn Jones at AllyFab (from whence it came) and he was deeply embarrassed, especially when I mentioned that my SVA was just a week or two away, to the extent of him wanting to drive down to collect it!

Next morning I think he must have looked at his map and realised just how far Ipswich is from Chesterfield, so he decided to send me a brand new tank, rather than having me wait for the old one to go back, be fixed, and sent back again.

Today the replacement arrived, it was fitted this evening, and all is well (thank heavens!).

So, an honourable mention for Bryn at AllyFab, for his service over and above the call of duty - he would have been within his rights to have told me to return it for fixing, but instead took that extra step to make a customer happy.

It's very reassuring to know that gentlemen like this do exist. There are so many rip of merchants around now... thankfully not in the Kit Car fraternity. (or so I believe!)

Trouble is no one ever says how good the product is but one failure and the world knows in seconds...

I did wonder about advertising this failure - but there isn't a thing in the world that doesn't go wrong sometime, whether it is a washing machine, computer program or pencil sharpener.

It's how the supplier deals with the failure that's really important to me.

If you get a mention in the "Beyond the call of duty" section. It's basically free advertising... though I guess it could be easily abused.

However, we could also have a section "Below the call of duty"

Not the cheapest, but beautiful work (excluding the oops!).

I have some 1.2mm ali sheet, would this be thick enough to make a tank out of?

The thickness is fine, just need a good welded to cope with 1.2mm, viper is doing tanks I think, a pretty respectable welder by all acounts

Cheers for that Mark. Vipers tanks are excellent value for money and his welding is spot on but as my Dad is a TIG welder it would be rude not to use his services free of charge. All I need to get hold of is an offcut of 50 mm ali tube for the inlet.

Just taken delivery of my tank which I got from allyfab as a result of David's above posting. Same price (despite cost of materials going up i'm told) and to my own design to suit my dedion/book chassis...

Lovely workmanship, hopefully get it fitted over xmas/new year....

Would happily recommend Bryn at Allyfab, the tank even has a pressure tested sticker on it, possibly a development to test against leaks before they're sent out!

We've built two Locosts with plastic fuel tanks and guess what..... neither of them leak!! One has had nearly 3 years of use, the other 6 months and we're chuffed to bits with them both! I guess what I'm saying is don't replace plastic tanks willy nilly, that's just a waste of hard earned cash, use them, abuse them and in six months or so you'll forget it's in there!

thats what it says on my rear spoiler, mind you Bryn did make the one off baffled foam filled tank inside a tank fitted to the car, and the catch tank too.

1st class work.

Bryn did my tank as well, first class work, and a really nice bloke to deal with. I gave him a full sized cardboard model of the tank I wanted and he made it in aluminium for me. He even fitted and adjusted the fuel sender and the filler (inlcuding welding a restrictor for unleaded petrol in it).

strongly recommended.
