The MK Indy is on order and I have been looking out for a Sierra donor. Typical, a few weeks ago there were plenty 2.0l pinto cars being offered, but
now I want one, nothing. I have a local contact I need to call tommorrow that has about 15 Sierras at the moment but they are all DOHC or CVH engines
(he reckons pintos are getting harder to find). Is the DOHC engine an option? I don't think I've heard of anyone using one so there must be a reason
why not.
My Father in-law has a 2.0l pinto engine and gearbox from an old Cortina sitting in the back of his garage that he said I could have. The engine has
been stripped down but never rebuilt. Would it be possible to use this engine as a heart transplant for a Sierra DOHC donor.
I'm probably asking some stupid questions here, but I'm sure there will be more.
Any help or advice greatly appreciated.
Paul
Just get any old sierra and worry about the engine after, you can always change engine numbers.
My front hubs, steering rack and column came from a 1.8 CVH,the rear diff and discs from a GLSi and the pinto is from a very very early 2Litre and is
identical to cortina MK4/5.
You only need to keep one log book if you want an age related plate.
I'm using the DOHC in one of my builds, it is tall like the pinto but the really annoying thing is the inlet chamber after the butterfly slant's up
towards the rear, presumably following the sierra bonnet and it makes the engine even taller. It is a strong engine but expensive for parts and
haven't found many performance parts for it. Oh yeh, the sump on mine is cast alloy and not good for shortening and the gearbox, don't know the type
yet, is very wide at the rear.
Maybe we should have a section in the photos that shows us what engine is what and what gearbox is what. Haynes manuals aren't that great for there
pics of different types. Boss man, could you sort something out?

The dohc engine is worse thanb useless in most peoples opionins, use a cvh or sohc, the dohc also uses a difrent gearbox,it is very wide at the front and prone to falling to bits
Who the hell let Wurzel Gummidge loose in the forum?
Must admit conrod, my gearbox selector is looking a bit 'falling to bits', and it is wide at the rear, 200mm wide, not good for a narrow chassis.

Its just my opinion that the CVH is better than the SOHC,i ran into problems with the engine mounts but it is fitable, you would have to make the mounts up,should be some pics somewhere i saw plenty CVH,s at the show,ps thanks for the helmet.

It will bolt straight on,but the clutch and starter are a bit mix n match, dont forget the spigot bush, sorry it was a year ago i did mine, early 1600 sierra clutch fits but you have to drill the bolt holes in flywheel or use CVH cover and sierra centre plate if you can get it seperatley
greetings i believe the dohc engine uses the later and bigger mt75 gearbox
warren .
CVH engine is pants as standard but tuning parts are dead common and it can be made to produce pretty good power so long as you put up with rattly
tappets. I've got one in the XR2000 and it's great now. I was planning on using one in my Locost but someone on here told me they had problems
fitting the alternator?
BTW as James now has his donor I guess I've got a few Sierra bits lying around should anyone need them. Engine has had it and I want the 'box but all
the rest prop/diff/driveshafts/hubs/rack etc etc are all there.
Chris
Chris, I might be interested, depends on how much you want for it. I could get mey bro to pick it up, he stays in wimbledon apparently not far from
you.
Dunc
No probs Dunc. Let me know what you're after and we'll arrange something!
