Love it

mistergrumpy - 8/2/09 at 03:11 PM

Crap band, crap video. Dare i say a kid could have thought of that!

ruskino80 - 8/2/09 at 03:27 PM

great band ,great video my kids could not do that-in my opinion

mistergrumpy - 8/2/09 at 03:40 PM

Am I watching the right video then. A puppet show at a kids show?

ruskino80 - 8/2/09 at 03:45 PM

.

mistergrumpy - 8/2/09 at 03:48 PM

At a kids school I meant. I gather I somehow go the wrong video then

mr henderson - 8/2/09 at 04:55 PM

From what I've heard of Coldplay which I admit isn't much, they write a good riff which ought to be a solid foundation, then they build a pile of not very good stuff on top of it.

This particular song is very reminiscent of 80's U2 but without the quality

I've never forgiven the singer for murdering You Only Live Twice (although the rest of the band played it well)

John

tegwin - 8/2/09 at 05:52 PM

Thats a pretty clever video IMHO

mistergrumpy - 8/2/09 at 06:07 PM

No I got the right video! Can anyone explain, and I'm honestly not trying to be funny, but what's clever about the video. It's just puppets right? Like that Team America film?

JoelP - 8/2/09 at 06:56 PM

i love his voice, but then again, i also love james blunt

Whereas I have been known to run across the workshop to turn off the radio when they are about to play one of his 'songs'

scootz - 8/2/09 at 07:21 PM

I don't know about how clever it is as I'm not a puppeteer, but neither the song or video does it for me! Just find both bland!

roadrunner - 8/2/09 at 07:56 PM

Well i really enjoyed that, GREAT BAND, and so is U2.

ruskino80 - 8/2/09 at 08:28 PM

what are peoples thoughts on m j's thriller video- i mean thats just a load of fake zombies and bad make up-isn't it?

The zombies were real, but the makeup was pretty bad.

For a really good pop video, may I direct your attention to the original Stones "It's only rock and roll"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhHODhTIvgo

Not availbale in England, according to you tube?

John

scootz - 8/2/09 at 10:45 PM

Yes... but you have to put Thriller into the context of its era.

Same as Dire Straits 'Money for Nothing' video or Peter Gabriels 'Sledgehammer'... both look pretty crappy now, but were ground-breaking stuff in their day!

Hellfire - 8/2/09 at 11:29 PM

That's amazing. You never see Punch and Judy stage diving or doing motorcycle stunts. That's the future for puppeteers. Very bland song though IMO and certainly nothing like U2.

Phil

I'm don't especially like his stuff, but I can't really comprehend why he attracts so much hatred and abuse.

Au contraire, that heavily delayed (echo) constantly repeating riff is straight out of the U2 songbook. Just imagine the same song, slowed down a bit, with the notes, the words and the perfomance improved and you wouldn't be that far away from some of the U2 greats.

on conclusion from reading this thread:

People are very grumpy and very critical.

They're doing alright for themselves, people wouldn't listen if they were that god awful, right?

Did you watch all of it with the stage dive, stunt bikes and pyrotechnics and the helicopter at the end ? I like Cold Play though. I don't like James Blunt's music but after seeing him on Top Gear I decided he's an alright bloke I'd like to see Rod Stewart and Robbie Williams launched from a catapult into the sea somewhere really cold and horrible though.
Edit to add :- U2 are sh!t

scootz - 9/2/09 at 11:02 AM

Ah... Rod Stewart. Again, not very fashionable nowadays, but boy was he good in his day(s).

One of the best male lead vocalists this country has ever produced (IMHO!).

Or perhaps it's just a little simpler... different people have different tastes!

cd.thomson - 9/2/09 at 11:15 AM

i happen to not particularly like Brie, yet if someone mentioned that they really liked it I wouldnt go on a tirade:

"Crap band, crap video. Dare i say a kid could have thought of that!"

"they write a good riff which ought to be a solid foundation, then they build a pile of not very good stuff on top of it."

"Just imagine the same song, slowed down a bit, with the notes, the words and the perfomance improved"

Yes of course people are entitled to their own personal opinions. But not their own personal opinons presented as their own personal fact. Each to their own and freedom of speech does not indicate an implicite right to be overtly critical of somebody because of their opinions.

Unless of course theyre trying to suggest that black is white. Which I would suggest all of the critics on this thread are doing considering the bands popularity:

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/a100539/coldplay-album-goes-platinum-in-three-days.html.

Thanks to the OP for linking the video for anybody else who would rather enjoy a few minutes of musical talent than mock the OPs tastes and sensibilities.

And for the record: I dont enjoy coldplay at all myself.

DarrenW - 9/2/09 at 11:22 AM

I like the song a bit but found that performance a touch wooden.

I was waiting for some retired lady to be sick over the vicar after eating a home baked scone.

Shame it needed a 6 year old in the front row to point out who the band was.

You just did!

No-one has criticized the OP as far as I can see. Just commented on what they like / dislike.

DarrenW - 9/2/09 at 11:28 AM

Music is like modern art. You either love it or hate it. Nothing wrong with either. Thats why there are so many choices.

Do you also write for the Daily mail, because that post showed an excellent ability to removal all context from a quote.

What a load of guff! I have opinions and as far as I am concerned they are my own personal facts. If that upsets you then you had better learn to live with it because there are plenty more where those came from.

Having said that, Coldplay not being very good goes well beyond my own personal opinion, and is an observable fact.

cd.thomson - 9/2/09 at 01:34 PM

Ill revert back to my original statement here and reiterate that theres a definite undercurrent of unnecessary critique and spitefulness at times on this forum.

Certain members definitely take it upon themselves to only comment on something when they disagree or disapprove.

Thats the last I'll say on the issue as generally this is not the case and this board is filled with intelligent, informative and friendly people. As far as for those who dont fall under this umbrella, they are easily ignored.

I'd also like to say that this comment isnt generated solely on a silly discussion of coldplays musical talents, and I greatly respect most people on both sides of this musical fence.

I hate this kind of bo$$ocks. Have the bottle to name names, or stay out of this discussion. 'Certain members', and everybody having to guess who you mean.

John

mistergrumpy - 9/2/09 at 04:46 PM

TBH I never watched the whole video including stage dives etc. because I didn't like it, didn't think it was worth me watching it. I don't like Coldplay and IMHO doing a puppet show for a video isn't that "clever". Different maybe, but not "clever". It was only what 30, 40, 50 years ago since there were loads of puppeteers and ventriloquists and the skill just got lost a bit due to telly I suppose but the video to me was no different to Team America.
I'm not trying to have a pop at anyones opinions and I can see that some are getting on their high horses because someone dared to say Coldplay are rubbish. Just my opinion that's all. Take it or leave it. You can even tell me to stick it up my arris, I don't mind, just offering my thoughts

Still waiting for a reply to this Craig, or for you to delete your ealrier comments about 'certain members'

I see you have been on the forum since I posted asking you to clarify matters, and I see you have chosen not to do so. I expect you realise that you have done wrong, but are not planning to put things right. Not appropriate to criticise 'certain people' if you are going to behave like that yourself.

Should you choose to delete your earlier remarks then I will delete my replies, and it will all be forgotten.

John

mistergrumpy - 9/2/09 at 05:35 PM

Calm down John. You sound a bit like the school bully. "Do as I say and you'll be okay". I don't think you should be giving ultimatums to anyone. Just ignore the comment if you don't agree with it

Calm down? Who said I was cross, I didn't
Nor did I say he had to do as I said. He can ignore it if he wants, never-the-less he made a snide remark about 'certain members' and I've called him to either back it up or delete it. You can ignore it if you want, but I am not going to.

I've offered him the chance to put things right by deleting the (IMHO) downright rude remarks, and if he chooses to do the right thing and do so I will of course have to delete the posts where I've quoted him.

I don't know if he was referring to me when he said 'certain members' but, from the context of this thread alone, it certainly seems that way. I think he may well have been referring to you too. I've always despised that sort of thing, making unpleasant remarks and presumably being ready to say "Oh I didn't mean you" when challenged.

Until he clarifies or deletes my remarks stand, and my invitation to him to do the right thing stands too.

Trust that makes my position clearer

John

mistergrumpy - 9/2/09 at 06:07 PM

Whatever mate. I really don't mind if he was referring to me (so feel free to name me). Its' an internet forum. I don't know him and he doesn't know me, it's hardly going to result him coming around to my house. For what it's worth I am a miserable shit, I know this but I gave my honest "opinion". I know I probably don't post as many "useful" posts as others but I'd rather not post if I'm not certain. Either way it's no skin off my nose.

Not bashing you CD, but I think you're WAAAY off the mark with that particular comment.

This is without doubt the most polite and helpful car-related website that I've ever come across. The craic is top-notch and the digs are usually tongue-in-cheek!

Yes - there will always be some differences of opinion and things may even get heated from time to time, but that's just the way it is!

Can you give a specific date or dates for the above because I must have been out then and missed it. He's always sounded like he was getting over laryngitis to me.

scootz - 9/2/09 at 09:16 PM

Think early 70's and The Faces...

OH YEAH!

mr henderson - 9/2/09 at 09:23 PM

I'm inclined to agree with Scootz, I think Rod Stewart pobably is the best Scottish male singer.

Fortunately I live in England (I think Rod does too)

I always judge each issue on its merits, and you can rely on me to agree with you every time you are right.

Not my fault if that hasn't happened very often
