Anyone know which of the following are cheapest to run?
Halogen heater
Oil filled radiator.
I get the feeling that the rad is cheapest but the halogen give instant heat.
Aren't halogen heaters IR heaters IE they don't heat the air just you. Whereas oil filled are radiators of heat (ie they have to heat up the air before you start getting warm). I use an oil filled but it's slow to warm up and in the recent really cold weather did diddly squat.... (in the end I turned it off and couldn't tell any difference)....
Neither, it comes down to the KW rating.
A 1kw oil heater gives off 1kw of heat the same as the halogen.
It just feels different to you as halogen is instant.
Try infared heaters if you want to just heat yourself
halogen will be more effective, i used to have an oil filled rad in my bedroom and it was useless.
oil filled rads do a fantastic job of heating the ceiling. but thats about it in my experience....

as i understand, IR heaters will heat all solid objects, so won't heat the air, but they will heat you, and things like your chassis and stuff, which should start giving off heat to the air (as far as i've managed to work out in my own haed anyway)
I had a couple of really old oil filled rads in my parents garage. Would flick them on as soon as I got in from work, by the time I'd changed and
eaten something they'd generally warmed up. Seemed to make quite a lot of difference.
My parents have a modern one in their hallway.... a Kyocera Dragon 2 or something. Seems to heat up really quickly compared to the old ones.... and
the amount of heat out of it is ridiculous! Heats the whole hallway and landing area.
Cheers,
James
