moderation
Staple balls - 5/3/04 at 10:45 AM

going on from the discussions about moderation in the sexuality thread, i'm wondering if it would be worth having a few mods around here, less as peace keepers/censors, but more to help out, help people post images, make sure there's warnings on NSFW content etc etc, just to keep the place safe for viewing at work/by younger people.

any thoughts?

ned - 5/3/04 at 10:50 AM

i don't see why this should be necessary. we are a friendly bunch and have done a good job of self modearting the site. there is a section for website problems where people test their avatrs and ask questions about this.

as long as everyone follows the 'gentlemans agreement' about posting dodgy links with warnings and disclaimers etc i don't think it should be necessary.

Ned.

Staple balls - 5/3/04 at 10:54 AM

yeah, this is true.

but then, some of the forum nazis think we should be censored, so i figured it was worth bringing it up in it's own thread

blueshift - 5/3/04 at 10:55 AM

Agreed, I think introducing moderators would be opening a can of worms.

Uh, agreed with ned that is. pesky timing

James - 5/3/04 at 11:01 AM

We've coped over 2 years without moderators so far!
I hope we won't ever need them- I'm sure we don't need them now.

James

ChrisW - 5/3/04 at 11:04 AM

I've never seen the need for moderators to be honest. In the time I have been running the site I think I have intervened twice, maybe three times. If you don't like a thread the 'report thread' button will alert me to it quickly at which point I will investigate.

Chris

Staple balls - 5/3/04 at 11:07 AM

was really just an idea to see peoples thoughts on the subject (in the light of the complaints about nothing much in sexuality)

and i agree there's no need for moderation (here at least) as we're mostly mature adults.

James - 5/3/04 at 11:23 AM

Has the report button always been there?
I seem to remember there were only 2 buttons in that area before???

Think I'm going blind- too much flashyourrack.com !

theconrodkid - 5/3/04 at 11:41 AM

funny you should say that, i work with someone called wally who also smells of wee, and his breath is undescribable!

i dont think we need mods either, most people here are pretty restrained to say we are crazy enough to build our own cars! if you dont like a thead, dont read it!

stephen_gusterson - 5/3/04 at 09:11 PM

virtually all TOL moderators got a case of 'power corrupts' at some time.

In his credit Chris has avoided that situation.

Mark Allanson - 5/3/04 at 09:37 PM

There are at present 2393 moderators on this site, if someone is out of line, someone else will point it out and and no problem seems to exist.

MikeR - 6/3/04 at 11:41 AM

Oi, I'm not corrupt, just a little flexible if you pay me enough

DavidM - 12/3/04 at 01:10 AM

Sorry, did I miss something? Was there a problem with the sexuality thread?

I'm sure as we're all sensible middle aged heterosexual men going through a mid life crisis, we shouldn't need moderating.

Mind you there's always the possibility that we're not I suppose.

So you could moderate but then surely we'd never know.

Just ask people to post all that stuff in the anything else section, and in the description just say "may contain explicit content" or whatever wording.

As a middle aged etc, etc, I personally think the anything else section is the best thing about the site, apart from the (ahem) butch manly car chat, of course.

Peteff - 12/3/04 at 10:59 AM

Has anyone seen one of his kits and how good are they? I may be tempted to look into a kit with a name like that, It's got to be a hit with the laydeez.

yours, Pete.

P.S. I'm not gay or owt.

No probs.....it's all pretty quiet on TOL..not much to moderate, except a few spammers to ban...that IS fun and satisfies my power craving....:

Plus, the wee smell is nearly gone now...

I read thru the infamous February/March 2002 period recently. What a tempest in a teapot! A very interesting time for TOL, and some of the players surprised me.

Post #37666 pretty much sums up Wally. I remembered the number as 'the mark of the beast'.

BTW, I'm a fan of the Yahoo lists, and include them on my daily rounds.

JamJah - 12/3/04 at 05:22 PM

Thought someone whould have said it at some somepoint....

We dont need any F*!@ING moderating.

...but a spell checker would be handy!
As is I type most into word and copy em back!

Ian Pearson - 12/3/04 at 07:25 PM

The only time I thought we could've done with somw sort of censorship, was when some dick for brain thought it was a good idea to use a pic of some unfortunate being fisted as his avatar. Seems he took the hint and went elsewhere.

stephen_gusterson - 12/3/04 at 07:45 PM

hope it wasnt the kinda fisting I have heard about!

Ask AlanB if you need more info

It was a play on words, didn't you get it. Sorry if it was too subtle.

Hands up here..

I got it Pete...

stephen_gusterson - 12/3/04 at 11:47 PM

I was just giving you the doubt of being an innocent Pete.

too subtle for me

Mr G - 7/4/06 at 08:47 PM

2 Years on and in all honesty I think this subject needs discussing again lads.

Jon Ison - 7/4/06 at 09:00 PM

I think you have a point

Hellfire - 7/4/06 at 09:38 PM

Couldn't ChrisW assign moderation rights to someone who frequents this forum more than he?? If so, we could all vote on who would make the best moderator and ChrisW could then assign rights.

Jon Ison - 7/4/06 at 09:41 PM

looking back 2 years ^^^^^ I posted non required, recent events have changed my mind.

flak monkey - 7/4/06 at 09:43 PM

Moderators you say?

Possibly a good idea now that ChrisW doesnt have as much time to spend tending to this site. However I think most things can be resolved without the need for moderators. I think we self regulate very well, and people seem to take notice if others complain.

If it comes down to it though, I wouldnt mind being a Mod because i spend a stupid amount of time on here.

David

Jon Ison - 7/4/06 at 09:57 PM

Couldn't agree more but "fist in face" is a bit much, Ive kept out of them too but this "was" such a great site and community too, what would potential builder think looking in for the 1st time, Donnington, you hit nail on head that is what locostbuilders "used" to be like, if he had bumped into us their he would have thought "what a great bunch of guys" and "what a great mix of cars" if he reads some of the recent ramblings he's long gone............

Jon Ison - 7/4/06 at 10:10 PM

You mean locost wristbands and the like ? Bet we could come clean on that one now ? Make a good topic, best bargain priced trackday..........?

Nah, I wasn't reading anything into your comments, I just think one or two need a bucket of water dropping on their heads, remember lads........"your a long time dead" Worse still you could have been on "take my mother-in-law" and had your car nicked for a week then later have too sell it.

billy - 7/4/06 at 10:16 PM

Id like to be a mod......... i can feel the POWA

Fozzie - 7/4/06 at 10:37 PM

Jon, I have read that post, and I don't think the guy was at all serious! I just think a very frustrated customer of a kit-car manufacturer.

Personally I have found some recent threads far more sinister, and again, and this is a personal opinion, offensive.

I have tried in the past to take a stand for the younger members, and as a woman who builds and is a racer, for myself and other female readers , only to be told if I dont like something dont read it! But if its not read how do you know?
I have stopped posting apart from 'club' type things for quite some time now, purely because there are the odd one or two with nowt better to do than 'flame' posts, so whats the point?
When all is said and done, it is the extreme minority that I/we are talking about. I agree with Hicost when he says to ignore, but, I do find it hard, when someone may be being slated, for no purpose, when the real reason just may be a hidden agenda.

All my very humble opinion of course!

Fozzie

Fozzie - 7/4/06 at 11:07 PM

Ooo 'Suits' you sir!

Fozzie

p.s. I 'might' think about changing the pic, just for you!
