my o/h wants me to take her to paris for a day trip/weekend,eurostar looks like the easiest way,anyone been and what is paris like near the station,i
dont want to go to a galic equivalent of kings cross with hookers and junkies trying to stab me,i can get that nearer home

catch a taxi or underground to the "Opera" area there are plenty of bars and restaurants etc. Everything is in easy walking distance apart from eiffel tower which is a tube ride away.

I'd go by train rather than fly. Charles de Gaulle is miles out of the city, though there's a train from the airport. By the time
you've checked in at the airport and found your way to the city centre, I doubt the train is any slower.
Watch out for taxi drivers. On guy, a kindly looking gent in a tweed suit made his own lane down the centre of a road which was 1 lane in each
direction. I don't just mean he overtook a few cars in a row, he stayed out for a mile or two!
Gare du Nord isn't in a particularly posh area but its not dodgy or dangerous by any means. Buy a carnet of metro tickets (basically 10 tickets
for 10 journeys) at one of the machines and go wherever you want.

To echo others, don't bother with taxis. Use the metro or RER, or rent Vélib' bikes at any of the stands - its only €1 for as many bike
journeys as you want in a day and its all automated - just use a credit card at a bike stand and it will assign you a bike.

You can use my taxi in Paris. I say it's my taxi as I'm sure I must now own it given what I had to pay the driver!!
I did actually keep the cup and saucer from my £8 cup of coffee as I thought it was included.
I'm not tight by any means but it is one of the most expensive places we've ever been!
Like London a weekend is not enough, but if that's what you've got you can either relax the weekend away or rush madly round to see as much as you can - I much prefer Paris to London, but like London there are masses of places to see. If you had more time, I'd have said to make sure to see Versailles (watch out the fountains are only on on certain days), but with limited time, you're better staying within the city. A high level view is a must (Eiffel Tower or Sacre Coeur spring to mind).
Conrod, if you hire and ride the bicycles you can't go unless you promise to post the pics on here when you get back.
BTW the French all wear lycra and squeaky shorts when cycling - when in Rome (or Paris in this case).......!

The best thing I liked about Paris was that you could easily walk around most of it - the centre where all the interesting bits are in quite a small
area, if you don't mind walking. The bits between are usually interesting enough to make the journey entertaining.
My wife and I used the Metro once, and taxis only to get to and from the station and hotel. The rest of the time we walked.

me and my brother started a website years ago, www.flushfrance.co.uk, the idea was, if everyone brought back some french dirt, france would get
smaller, and britain would get bigger we never kept up the domain name though...
