Got a couple of gas questions.

1) I've got a gas boiler that vents onto the wall with my drive. its close (12" to my back door. How close can i fit a lean too roof? I've had a look and I think i've got to have 1m clear air all around it. Is this true? Can you take the normal boiler vent off the wall and fit something that extends upwards so it would clear the lean too roof? If i changed the boiler to a ????? would that make life easier? (i don't know what modern boilers are called)


2) i've got a precast flue and gas fire. I hardly use the fire and lots of cold air comes down the flu. I was thinking of removing the fire completely (obviously paying someone to cap the gas). Can I block up the flue as it comes into the lounge or will i have to provide some sort of vent to stop condensation / damp air circulation problems? (the top of the chimney does have a little 'hat' on it).

Do neither, and finish your car...!

1/ all depends on the boiler if its a new condensing boiler alot of them do a plume kit which you can add on and take through the lean to roof you need the proper plume kit for your boiler and make sure the manufacterer is happy letting you use it like this
With a balanced flued boiler or a normal fan flued boiler there is nothing like this if you have the instructions for the boiler it will have a diagram of a house showing the distances everything has to be or most manufacturers have a copy on the net DO NOT make something to fit

2/ i used to do alot of work fitting fireplaces and alot on new houses they used to just plaster board and plaster straight over the precast starter blocks covering the hole with no vent so the home owner could choose to have a fireplace or not so cant see that you would need to vent the flue
But having said that on a proper chimney if you do block them up you need to vent them

The fireplace in our living room, which has never been used, is simply boarded and plastered.

The fire in the dinning room (which is used) gets newspaper stuff in the throat (out of view) during winter when not lit. (and left to vent during summer)

its the great Brirish summer time why worry about gas boiler now LOL. You should be worrying about the price of wood because were all gonna have to start making boats if the rain continues.

got plenty of wood - i keep finding pallets on my way home

now is the time to sort a shelter out so i can put stuff on the drive and keep it dry + i'd rather mess up the gas fire now when its warm instead of having building work done during winter.
