Untaxed cars that you just bought
DarrenW - 17/11/09 at 09:40 PM

Quick question if i may.

Ive got the chance of a car. Its 200 miles away. Just been MOT'd, ill be able to insure it online etc. I wont however be able to tax it before having to drive home. Is this allowed?

Im not sure if last owner Sorn'd it or it just ran out, all i know for sure is it hasnt any tax.

Cheers,
Darren.

Stop at the Post office and tax it on the way home!. or Trailer it home.....

blakep82 - 17/11/09 at 09:42 PM

Of course not. If its not taxed it must not be on the road

clairetoo - 17/11/09 at 09:42 PM

Simple answer is no - if it aint taxed , then it aint taxed and it cant be driven on the road .

UncleFista - 17/11/09 at 09:43 PM

Tax it online ?

DarrenW - 17/11/09 at 09:48 PM

Ha ha - online tax may be the answer. Thanks. i just hope the insurance company would update the ins register instantly if i insure it online.

If i manage to print off the online insurance docs, i assume i can tax it at a post office even if log book isnt in my name by applying for new log book at the same time.

The bit i didnt say earlier is that a mate of mine (part time car trader) is selling it. The person he got car off had to apply for new log book after losing it. There is a slim chance that the new one may not arrive in time for me collecting the car hence why i wasnt sure if id be able to tax it.

Can i still apply for the logbook at the post office and tax it if i have just bought the car and dont have the old one off current registered keeper?

not without the new keeper supplement ,

Call seller

Ask him if he is still has insurance on it.

If he does, go together to the post office and let him buy it for you.

McLannahan - 17/11/09 at 09:59 PM

You can't tax online unless you're the current owner with the V5 in your name. If you're not yet the owner or it's still in the process of being transferred it'll not work sadly.

Trailer job I reckon.

Cheers

I taxed mine before I had it collected.

If you have the log book number you can tax on line, the disc will just be sent to seller, who can forward it.

I got my car, drove it home from Liverpool to London and only got into trouble when I parked it on the street and a passing DVLA van saw it wasn't taxed and had it towed away (it had been parked there for three days to be fair).

In my defense I didn't realise it hadn't been taxed (doh!) and the poxy garage saved £35 but not taxing it for the year and lost me £190 to get my car back off the DVLA....

mangogrooveworkshop - 17/11/09 at 10:08 PM

dont chance it Darren two of my mates have just served 6 month bans for motoring offenses

Can you get a set of trade plates......

JoelP - 17/11/09 at 10:08 PM

i'd vote trailer too. Sounds a real headache.

That said, id just drive it, but your attitude to risk may be different from mine! No tax is a very minor offence.

DarrenW - 17/11/09 at 10:09 PM

Current owner is in Maidenhead. Car is in Worcester. Im near Durham. Car was stood for 6 months prior to my mate getting it so no tax or insurance. This is why its a bit of a pain trying to co-ordinate everything.

Best chance is to get the registered keeper to sign and post the V5 by special delivery tomorrow (assuming he has recieved it from Swansea) so i can take it to PO when i get down there on Friday.

What a chew! I hope a Lexus GS300 is worth it?

DarrenW - 17/11/09 at 10:17 PM

Im just chuckling at the votes for trailer. I would struggle to push the car on its own for 200 miles let alone when its on a trailer

Im tempted to just drive it. Its just the active management bit on M42 past Birmingham that im most worried about. That said if owner sends the logbook out asap i might have a chance to tax it at the post office.

I think my mate drove it from London to Worcester with no tax or test! Id at least make sure its tested and insured and i have receipt showing purchase date.

MK9R - 17/11/09 at 10:26 PM

Book it in for an mot near home the day you pick it up, you are allowed to.drive an untaxed car to an mot station.

Ben_Copeland - 17/11/09 at 10:48 PM

If your mate has trade insurance he can tax it with the V5.

Otherwise trailer it.

I once had a trader tax a car before i would buy it, unfortunately they must have been forced to fill in a V62 and they were added as an owner.
Worth looking into though. If he doesnt have trade insurance i bet the garage who did the MOT will.

morcus - 17/11/09 at 11:02 PM

Your options are, trailer, putting it through an MOT (Which if failed means you'd lose the current one) or get the current owner to keep it till all the paper work comes through and you can get the tax.

UncleFista - 17/11/09 at 11:05 PM

If you do decide to chance it, isn't driving with no tax a none endorsable offence anyway, ie they can only fine you not give you points ?

and take the car away from you and fine you a largish fine.
Neither are worth the hassle

Perhaps avoid the M42...go M5 up to north of Brum then cut across...

02GF74 - 18/11/09 at 10:34 AM

before the days of big brother britain, you could chance it and it would have gotten away from it.

Now with all the APNR cameras. I doubt you have route from sauce land to durhamshire without passing one.

is there a hurry - can you not wait a week to get paper work sorted, or until 1st Dec when you will get a full month?

worth enquiring breakdown companies as for trailering costs - should be less then £ 330 is my guess..

owelly - 18/11/09 at 02:07 PM

I'd drive it back. Take along all your documents. Drivers license (both bits if you have such a thing), a printout of the insurance (make sure it includes the policy number and start date), MOT etc.
If you get stopped, it's obvious that you've just bought the car (oh yeah. Get a dated reciept!) and you'll obviously be taxing it from the start of this month. Job jobbed. I suggest hiring a car to drive down there, leave the hire car and drive the Lexus back. It'll cost abouit £30 to hire the car for a one way journey and if there's a probby with the Lexus, just bring the hire car back!

DarrenW - 18/11/09 at 05:42 PM

Hire car is interesting but the drop charges make it less attractive.

Im starting to think its not worth the hassle. Im only interested as its a nice big comfy car at the right price. Ive found out today its a little older than first thought too.
