Customary injury picture, ouch!
liam.mccaffrey - 18/8/10 at 02:18 PM

Walked my face into the spindle of an 18" gate valve yesterday. Lots and lots of blood, flappy bit of lip and cut gums. Fortunately my teeth weren't hit. Its nowhere near as bad as it looked at first. Though my whole face is swollen now and I have a 2" trapezoidal thread imprint across cheek and mouth.

Been nicknamed "faceplant" already at work.

That will be you living off of soup for a while. Just dont laugh or smile, you will cry!!!

I have had many a lip injury while playing rugby. Why do friends find it funny to cause you pain!?

liam.mccaffrey - 18/8/10 at 05:56 PM

i knew the valve was there but it was open so the spindle was sticking out. It was at face height on an uphill walk, as i walked up the hill it popped under the level of the peak on my hard hat i didn't see it in time against the background of an overcast sky.

SteveWalker - 18/8/10 at 09:36 PM

I must admit I'm always a bit dubious about hard hats - there are many areas of construction sites, etc. where they make sense, but I have often had to wear one when there is no point and I do find that I bang into things because of the restricted vision forward and upward.

The silliest I've had was working on the control panel of a scraper bridge on a wastewater settling tank. They were very strict on the wearing of hard hats, despite me being at the highest point for at least 150m in any direction and the damned thing being in my way or falling off all the time as I bent to work on the panel! I was probably in far more danger of being struck by lighting or of something dropping on me from a passing aircraft than another worker dropping anything on me!

austin man - 20/8/10 at 09:13 AM

Least. It didn't affect your looks lol
