mountain bike transport
Schrodinger - 23/7/23 at 02:39 PM

I'm traveling, from Aviemore to Norwich then on to Devon, a bit later in the year by train.
Can any of you cyclists on here recommend a bike bag/box to transport my 2021 Orange 5 with me. My first thoughts were a cheap bag as it will not be thrown around by airport handlers. Then my wife suggested box hire for the three - four weeks we will be away.
Any thoughts/suggestions welcome.

Pop to a bike shop like Halfrauds and ask if they have any cardboard bike boxes left over. Flown to the Alps many times with my bike in those, just remove the pedals, rotate the bars and pack the wheels well next to it. They're usually FoC.

Good call!

Most bike shops are usually keen to get rid of them rather than clog their recyling wheely bins up with them.

Tip - remove your pedals and fit them back to the other side of the cranks. Stops the bike being ridden and stops you losing the pedals. Done this before when air travelling with my bike.

I did consider getting a cardboard box but I am going to have to carry it between Euston & Liverpool Street then Liverpool St and Waterloo a few days later.
So it needs to have some sort of wheels on the box.

I modded them with 5 quids worth of alu rod and pram wheel from the local store. Towed them all over the place. Like this

Could be risky, but depending on your travel timings, could you:

Unpack the bike
Cycle between locations
Arrive at a pre arranged bike shop (to collect another box)
Repack the bike
On your way

Like I say, could be risky, but it could be an adventure
