Old Mini Vs Old Beetle
tri - 10/4/06 at 06:15 PM

I have been looking into having a Beetle or a Mini for my first car but i am totaly torn between the to please give me ur thoughts?

Mini would become a customised Mini
Beetle would become a "hot rod" look

Cheers Tri

Old mini cooper all the way. Much more fun than the Keisers car

zilspeed - 10/4/06 at 06:20 PM

If you like driving, buy a mini. Nothing much beats doing handbrake turns in a deserted snow covered car park in your first mini.

If you like looking cool (whatever that is) and don't much care for driving, buy a beetle.

Unless you fit a 2.2 motor and go drag racing...

Mini everytime, and I used to work at a VW dealers servicing Beetles. NO heater to speak off , thirsty, expensive to repair, not as reliable as people think, slow, and all of them apart from South American imports are at least 25 years old, If you want a VW get a type 2 and stick a water cooled lump in

Kissy - 10/4/06 at 07:28 PM

Mk1 Golf.
GTi if poss, but a 1.6GLS will make you smile - loads of tweeky bits still around. Classic insurance like the others.

Mini - Zils' right.
Beetle - get in a crosswind and wonder what the f***'s going on!

Simon - 10/4/06 at 07:39 PM

Had several Minis and a couple of Beetles.

The Minis were all sold, whereas the Beetles (incl a '56 oval) felt the wrath of my v. large angle grinder.

COREdevelopments - 10/4/06 at 08:01 PM

the mini speaks for itself. i had one for my first car and loved every minute with it, even when i was repairing it,
bearing in mind im a mini nut and wouldnt have it any other way!!!

so get a mini

chris.russell - 10/4/06 at 08:04 PM

mini!

benji106 - 10/4/06 at 08:04 PM

quite interested in this topic as i am considering a beetle or a mini but at the moment i think I'd rather have a mk2 golf.... now if only i had some bloody money!

Pezza - 10/4/06 at 08:09 PM

Another vote for the mini here tbh.
Good fun car to drive, you always feel you're going faster than you are lol
Ben

mac1ZR - 10/4/06 at 08:57 PM

Mini
we ve done beetles and its like throwing cash into a big black hole

jock - 10/4/06 at 09:15 PM

MINI if you want to see mine i live at armadale west lothan but i have the other thing to

DIY Si - 10/4/06 at 09:38 PM

MINI every single time. Handles better than a lot of modern cars, you can still look cool if you so wish, tuning parts are cheap and plentiful, and many can be made at home. Ie most suspension mods only require a hacksaw to shorten the suspension trumpets. And they can go just as fast as you think, and much faster then many others think you're going too! I regularly wee off type R's and impreza's rounbd the local back roads.

Ps since when did the site begin correcting swearing? It say pi$$ on my screen, but wee when I submit it!

trogdor - 10/4/06 at 09:42 PM

i would say mini too, they are so cool to drive and are alot of fun! beetles are nice too, but as mentioned before they are expensive to mod, and are getting expensive to buy. (Can't beleive how much type 2's cost now!) and don't handle that great or go that fast unless modified. whereas a standard mini is pretty good at that already! everyone loves minis too, think italian job!!

Peteff - 10/4/06 at 10:03 PM

How much are you taking off Get yourself an old Imp if you want to be different to the crowd. Minis are nice but they're a pain to work on, I've had a few as well so don't think I'm just saying this. They are easy to drive but when they let go watch out, they do bite.

Jasper - 11/4/06 at 06:56 AM

Mini - but as others have said get used to working on them .....

Bettle - cool but crap in almost every other respect

(and I've had both)

MikeRJ - 11/4/06 at 07:46 AM

Mini, without a doubt. I've had about 5 of them since I started driving way back when. My very first car, an 850cc Belgium import with Cooper S disks sticks in my mind as probably the most fun car I have ever owned. Was only £75 from auction as well.

However, they do rust so either be prepared to do some work to one that is already suffering, or buy a nice one and keep on top of the rust that will inevitably appear.

Syd Bridge - 11/4/06 at 09:08 AM

Suspension mods only require a hacksaw to shorten the suspension trumpets

Plus a drill to soften the 'donuts' to give a ride that won't shake the fillings out of your teeth!

Cheers,
Syd.

NS Dev - 11/4/06 at 11:04 AM

Mini

to comment on the beetle would be a waste of valuable time, it is that shite!

andyps - 11/4/06 at 12:52 PM

Another vote for the best car from me - the Mini. Autocar voted it car of the century for good reason.

Cousin Cleotis - 14/4/06 at 06:53 PM

niether, be different. if i had another chance i would own an imp or lada saloon as my first car, both would be cheaper, faster, and better handling than either a mini or beetle.

Paul

britishtrident - 14/4/06 at 06:59 PM

Imp Sport --- fastest cornering production road car of the 60s bar none.

rusty nuts - 14/4/06 at 09:03 PM

Imps ? you must be joking, crap transaxle, head gaskets that blew at the drop of a hat and driving in any side wind over 5mph a bag of sand was needed in the front to keep it on the road.

MikeRJ - 15/4/06 at 12:46 PM

I seriously doubt the lada has better handling than the mini in stock form. At least, not if the awfull, hatefull Lada Riva I had a drive in years ago is anything to go by.

SMB - 15/4/06 at 10:11 PM

Mini all the way, and speaking of which, was in Barnsley on Thur night and watched a Mini kick a R5Turbo all round a roundabout, left it standing.

Speaking of Golf GTi's, i have an early Mk2 for sale, swop for Mini Clubman Estate!

Triton - 16/4/06 at 08:14 PM

Mini...up hill tight bend..........3 wheels and mad noise.....but the strokers were better

Aboardman - 16/4/06 at 09:12 PM

mini here is the one i am working on

i have driven both within a couple of hours, my lada is far superior, especially now ive fitted bigger wheels and tyres, cut one coil off the rear springs and fitted bilstein shocks to the rear. all i need to do now is fit bilstein shocks to the front, add a second anti roll bar to the front and set up the suspension geometry. vented disks would be useful, solind disks glow red hot after 30mins driving on unclassified roads.

Paul

Spyderman - 17/4/06 at 02:37 PM

A few years back I would have said Beetle.
Now I say Mini.
Spares and parts for Beetle have gone astronomical in price whereas Mini stuff is still fairly cheap.
Beetles can look so cool, but require a hell of a lot of work to get to that stage. Minis on the other hand are just pure fun to drive, and when you are sitting inside it what would you prefer?

Must have been a very tired example of a mini.....

I remember Autocar once saying the Mini was the best handling car up to a Lotus Esprit Turbo (price wise) with no mention of any Ladas - aren't they for keeping food in

40k p-reg('97) john cooper, total peice of shite, really not my cup of tea.

If it had the 13" wheels they don't handle anything like as well - 10" are best.

DIY Si - 18/4/06 at 05:08 PM

Agreed, 10x5.5/6 are the best. Nice, light wheels a bit of camber and you're laughing. You can go futher and lower it, bit of camber at the back (more added at the front due to lowering) and you'll embarras all sorts of things. Tune the engine and you'll laugh heartily at even more stuff, especially on back roads. Just be sure to fit green stuff pads and the biggest brakes you can fit under the wheels. The only car that's ever raced mine and won is my mate's elise.
