Impractical Car Suggestions
Hellfire - 28/11/06 at 02:35 PM

Thinking of getting a little runabout for the wife . Something totally impractical but capable of transporting three people (wife and two young daughters). Preferably a cabriolet of some sort and a bit sporty. Budget about £3,500. I like the old MK1 Golf GTI cabriolet but is there owt else that fits the bill? Not too concerned about age of vehicle.

Phil

You are aware that it will most probably have a car engine in it?

alister667 - 28/11/06 at 03:05 PM

Does an MX-5 have any back seats at all?
If so maybe one of those.
Obviously you can stick an R1/Blade/ZX12 in it later.

Triumph Vitesse?

morris minor soft top - a bit rare now but not that quick - plenty of engine bay room for a V8

When I said age doesn't matter, I would prefer if it wasn't ancient. Let's say about 1980 onwards.

martyn_16v - 28/11/06 at 03:27 PM

You could get a mk3 golf convertible for that money, but don't expect it to be any more reliable than the mk1. Don't know if you could pick up a early 90's audi conv for that kind of cash?

2CV?

HF Turbo, early Integrale

GavBurns - 28/11/06 at 03:34 PM

Be quick only 10mins left on this one.

A mate of mine used to have one of these - we thought it was very cool

It's a Talbot Samba by the way

That would be a good swap

pewe - 28/11/06 at 03:56 PM

Now I know you may not like this one but if you are having a sensible fit what about a SAAB 900 or early 9-3 convertible?
Quite a few around, good amount of space, solid build, good independants for spares & repairs and some have turbos! Cheers, Pewe

a proper car

Gotta be a smallish car. What about a Peugeot 206CC, do you reckon you get a decent one for about £4K? What are they like?

nick205 - 28/11/06 at 04:16 PM

Now I like Pugs as a rule, but the 206cc is heavy, sluggish and ugly (IMHO).

MK1 Golf Clipper would be my choice

Manic mechanic - 28/11/06 at 04:19 PM

306 Cab is what I would go for you should get a good one for that sort of money.

PS. Nice to see your looking at proper engined vehicles even if it is for the other half.

Hellfire - 28/11/06 at 04:34 PM

Now there's a thought. I wonder if Martin could do a three seater inline Sprint R?

Doubt it, we struggled to get £3500 for a 'normal' 206 earlier this year. The early 206's had really horrible seats, f'kin uncomfortable and known to aggravate some people's back troubles (which is why the other halfs got sold on after a month of ownership, she couldn't drive it for more than about 15 min).

DIY Si - 28/11/06 at 05:54 PM

I have an MGTF 135 for sale for approx £4,300 if your interested. Cambelt done, new clutch, new back tyres etc etc etc.

Oh and it's british racing green!

Hellfire - 28/11/06 at 06:04 PM

Only a two seater though

Stick with the GOLF , best older car around , even thought of one for myself and family , but that would mean selling the V5.

It appears to have a permanently attached tin roof though? Nothing an angle grinder couldn't fix I suppose...

Marcus - 28/11/06 at 10:15 PM

What about a Punto cabrio?
