Evening All, I have just got hold of an old ingersol rand compressor reciprocating, looks like two stages or just twin, all I want to know is what oil should I put in it.
Works great 150 psi not too noisy about 30 years old.

get the proper comp oil,most motor factors will sell it,i had an IR,50 odd years old and good as the day it was made

It's a single grade compressor oil, 30 grade usually and it doesn't contain the detergents and additives in car oil.

So its definitely the same oil that you shove directly into the arse of tools that you put in the "sump" of compressors that take oil themselves?

My recent purchase (100litre, 3hp) came with really crap instructions and referred to grades of oil I'd never heard of. But I do have some "air tool oil" from Screwfix.

It makes sense that it should be the same as the compressor (if its not oil free) pumps a bit into the air to keep the tools lubed right?

Just checking before I use the wrong oil!

It also mentioned different grades well viscosities (I assume) for summer and winter - do you need to bother as are winters aren't *that* cold or should I say our summers aren't that hot!

I use 10W30 motor oil in mine (have done for decades), and it works great. The oil I have for my air tools is awfully thin for a compressor, I think. If you're going to change types of oil, I'd try to get all the old oil out first, just to be sure there are no compatability problems between lubricants.
