Trolley Jack
cadebytiger - 26/2/07 at 12:13 PM

Been looking at trolley jacks that will go under the car. All i can find are the alu racing jacks.. Sort of had my eye on one for a while.

What am i best to go for?

a clark one:

Or one off ebay?

I'm sure there must be loads of you out there with something like this. Any help would be great

Thanks

I bought the £20 jobbie from Halfords and modded it to go lower - basically I hacked off the load bearing 'pad' and stuck a couple of layers of rubber mat on top. It now goes down to 80mm.

why aluminium?

I have several bought from halfords, they were about £30 for the 3-ton ones, the best is the JCB one as its well made.

I used to design aluminium alloy jacks for specialist lifting applications such as lifting manhole covers--- best advice I can give don't get buy a light alloy jack unless you really need one.

I was called in because the company making them had something approaching an 80% failure rate because the original designer had just taken a design for a steel framed jack and changed the material, changed the material thickness here and there and aded a few fillets.

2 ton one was on offer at aldi a couple of weeks back (a tenner) - might be worth checking round

right then. That would an alround don't go for the alu one!

We think halfrauds is the way then do we?

I though last time i checked in there the best one was one that went down to about 140mm. Not really good enough but maybe i need to have a better look.

Thanks for the advice!

Rupert

was looking at that very one (see above) . maybe that will do. The tiger is very low at the front tho!

why do they not make a steel one which will drop to 80mm??!?!

Madness

I've modded normal ones in the past but have recently treated myself to one that looks the same as the eBay one above.

It lifts very quickly as is lower that even the modded one. Its not that light though but is pretty well made.

If your car is light enough and low enough you could go for a quick lift jack that doesn't have any hydraulics its just a lever, they lift really quick and from about 30mm But they don't lift that high. Raldes / Demon Thieves sell em for about 80quid I think - or you could make your own if you've got some box section left over

one of the things I'd now look out for in a jack is the handle being able to swivel from side to side. My JCB jack has this and I have found it very useful indeed.

We have one like nick205 has posted, just park the desired wheel on a brick and the jack slips under nicely.

That's Low Cost

Costco have had the aluminium ones in for a while. They are about £20 cheaper than Machine Mart for the same item. If your a member might be worth taking a look.

Cheers

If you can't get your trolly jack under your car why not drive car onto 2 scaffold planks hence lifting it higher off the ground. Just a thought
