Pipex broadband?
Chippy - 6/3/07 at 10:58 PM

Hi, anybody got any experience with Pipex, seems like quite a good deal, IF, there any good. Thanks, Ray

ReMan - 6/3/07 at 11:14 PM

Been on Pipex for about 4 years, service and speed have been great. If you can get a good price i'd say do it.
It's time I askeed them for a price cut, what have you been offered/where?

Chenti - 6/3/07 at 11:15 PM

I have been with them for several years...really good...

ecosse - 6/3/07 at 11:20 PM

The only thing I have ever heard people complain about pipex is that they are not the easiest to leave!
They can apparently make it a bit of a painful process, but you could probably level that complaint at most ISP's

Cheers

Hi Reman, I am already with Pipex for my phone, inc. line rental. Their offer price is 29.99 month, which includes free calls 24/7/365 to all 01 & 02 numbers, plus international at 2p a min, plus line rental. Seems like a good deal to me, and Ecosse if they are as good as said then why would you want to leave,. Thanks guys, Ray

Hi Ray,

Pipex seem to be a mixed bag at the moment. They were once very highly regarded, Indeed they were my first ISP back in the mid to late 90's and were excellent. But there seems to be more people complaining about their service of late and especially there throttling of peer-to-peer bandwidth (seems 20kbps is the max you'll see). If you don't use P2P software that won't be a problem mind you. Probably best to have a gander at some of the forums ADSL Guide Net4Nowt etc.

I was with Pipex for several years up until about 18 months ago and they were okay for performance and reliability but customer service is truly aweful.

My Dad has been with them for over a year and he has asked me a few times about moving to another ISP because he can never get anyone on the phone despite phoning at various times. When he does finally get through, he gets to talk to someone who doesn't seem to be able to do anything useful and promises of call backs are broken.

I'm now with Zen Internet and they are the bee's knee's in every respect. They do charge more than most but as an IT Consultant who uses the internet for home-working and having a wife and kids who use the internet a lot in the evenings, the extra level of service is well worth the extra few quid. For info, I pay £24.99 for 20GB downloads per month (uploads are free) at upto 8MB speed.

HTH,
Craig.

Pipex recently bought the Bulldog customer base from Cable & Wireless. Would guess that they're in the middle of digesting this beast which may explain some issues with customer service.

I was happy with them until trying to leave. They have been terrible.

I am still arguing with them.

hi been with pipex since started my company, broadband for 5(?) years too. never had any complaints and generally would recommend them BUT recently their customer service has been sh!t (according to customers) hopefully this is only a short term issue....... hopefully

Been with Pipex for a few years, generaly ok but what has really annoyed me is their attitude to upgrading existing customer accounts, basicly they don't! I am still on an expensive (~£23) 1MB package, but without canceling and starting another 12month contract (which I would never do) there seems no upgrade path.

Very tempted to move to a different ISP to be honest.

nre - 7/3/07 at 12:24 PM

I was with Pipex until Feb this year. I confirmed with them I was out of my 12 month contract as I wanted to move to a different ISP. They confirmed no cancellation fee would be charged. The day after giving notice I was charged £82. They agree that I am due it back, but 6 weeks later and still no sign of a refund. Do not touch with a bargepole if you intend moving on in a years time!

I have moved to madasafish who have proved very good, sorted a couple of teething problems, give out a free router (not a rubbish usb modem, a proper router) or charge £25 to upgrade to a wireless router. If you put in my referral code, 4229817, you get an extra £10 (refunded to your acct within 3 months...sorry for blatant ad!)

Edit: Reasons I moved to madasafish were:

-Good calls package (£9.99/month line rental & all eve & w/end calls)
-Router
-Good reputation for customer service

The BB is averagely priced, but the whole package is good (over 12 months works out at £25/month inc BB/line rental/eve & w/end calls... or just over £24 using my referral code)

Cheers,
Neil

As a matter of fact, I don't normally, but I did think that my most recent one on Friday was very slow considering it was a common file? Anyone know any more about this?

Mark Allanson - 7/3/07 at 10:48 PM

I am thinking of leaving Pipex, the connection reliability is good, the speed is adequate (usually 950kbs on a upto 2meg connection), its the accounts area which is diabolical, I have a direct debit set up, but they dont take any money for 3 month and then threaten me with court action, so I send a cheque and remind them of the DD, they leave it 3 months.......

The premium rate contact number usually takes about 40 mins to answer

You takes your choice

Why don't you guys wait a couple of weeks before deciding. BBC Watchdog are doing a review of ISP's at the moment and they expect to publish their findings in a couple of weeks or so.

Cheers,
Craig.

Ive just left Pipex after being with them for about 3 years because as others have said, their customer service has gone downhill considerably (seemingly since The Hoff turned up ), and because I had more frequent connection drops in recent months.

Also because I don't really use our landline for calls, none of their current deals were very appealing, the cheapest they could offer me ADSL MAX (8Mbit) broadband was £25/month.

It also took 2 attempts to get my MAC from Pipex, first time the gimp on the phone supposedly requested it and told me to call back in 3 days as they no longer email them out. 3 days later I call up to ask for my generated MAC only to be told there was no record on my account of this request, and that MACs are ALWAYS emailed out to the user after about 3 days, so basically the first guy was on a jolly and couldnt be arsed to deal with my call.

Ive now switched to ADSL24 having read quite a few good reviews on the ADSL forums. For £20 a month I get 30Gb peak limit and 300Gb (basically unlimited) off peak overnight / weekends per month so I just schedule any torrents etc to run at those times, all without any p2p throttling at all. The package also comes with a static IP address which is useful for me, plus a very good webspace hosting package and your own subdomain with unlimited POP3 email accounts.

ADSL24 are a fairly small operation in themselves but act as an ADSL reseller for Enta.net who are a big commercial ISP provider with a good reputation, so the infrastructure and support is very good. Its still early days but so far its been brilliant, the line was activated when they said it would be, and the speed/reliability has been very good so far.

Chris

BTW, if you're on Pipex you can get around the p2p throttling by encrypting the data, torrent apps such as Azureus allow you to do this in the options. Once its encrypted, Pipex cannot identify what kind of traffic it is, so they can't throttle it to 20kb/s
