I can buy a plug in unit for the car and use follow us to track it fairly cheaply.
Does anyone else use these types of service?
How accurate are they or are they just a gimmick?
Cheers Martin
Its based on triangulation of your cellphones identification signals with masts in the area. It will be better where there are more masts, but then
again, there only tend to be more masts in cities, where there are lots of buildings to cause reflections in the signals, which will reduce the
accuracy.
I suspect its good for knowing the area that you're in (think 1/4 mile circle), but not which street, or what direction/speed you're
travelling in.

How does it send out its whereabouts? I can see how it tracks its own position, but how does it notify you?

You pay for the tracking.
Basically they triangulate the position of a mobile phone.
The unit connects to your car battery and has a pay as you go sim card installed, plus has 11 days back up battery inside.
If your car gets nicked, the police or yourself should be narrow down where it is.
