I have a problem with the brakes on my wife's tin top. It's a nice 106 XSi, 1.6 which was once mine, always maintained etc etc.

I replaced the front discs and pads a month or so ago. This morning, on the way into the car park at her work the brakes make a bang and then start rattling as she comes to a stop.

I called in there at lunchtime and one of the pads has come out. The little L shaped wedge that is supposed to hold them in has gone. I know I put it in the right way round and secured it with the pin.

How could it have come out? I have ordered another fitting kit, but it won't be here until tomorrow morning.

If, as I suspect, the leading edge of the caliper is worn, allowing the wedge to come out, I'll have to replace it.

Question is, do I replace both sides at once, or can I just do one side?

Hair pin clip dropped out --- can happen if not pushed on properly, or if the clip was stretched.
Really best to use new clips each time.


Never liked that type of retainer a really hinky way to secure a caliper.

Clip probably rusted through if its the same as the ones on my old 205 and my misses's old 106.

If its worn it away just stick a blob of weld on it in a few places and dress it back to fit.
