I'm looking for inspiration for a classic car that I can run as cheaply as possible to and from work. It has to be in order of importance:
1) Tax free
2) Easy to work on.
3) Relatively cheap £2K top wack
4) Roofed :-)
5) As good looking as possible.
6) 30+mpg
It does not have to be fast. Just interesting.
Something to tide me over winter.
No mgb's.
Any thoughts?
beetle
camper van
mk3 cortina !
mini
Sinclare C5 and an umbrella?
Ford 100e
imp
escort mk2... but gives only 27 mpg
GT6
1. yes
2. very
3. possible
4. yep
5. very (IMO)
6. hmm

1) Tax free
Yes! (1970)
2) Easy to work on.
Yes (bits are dirt cheap and easily available)
3) Relatively cheap £2K top wack
Yes if you shop around
4) Roofed :-)
Yep
5) As good looking as possible.
Yes if you get the wire wheels!
6) 30+mpg
Errrmmm.... Maybe when I've finished my locost and look at doing a diy EFI on it.
MGB is around 25mpg, but then my daily drive is my Triumph Tiger 955i (40+mpg and 0-60 in around 4.0 seconds).

Beetle... I can afford one ;-) But I'm from newquay. It may be a bit of a cliche..
Camper, can't afford one. You wouldn't believe how much they go for now.
Mk3 Cortina. Do they really do 30+mpg?
Mini, not old enough for tax free.
Sinclare err no. But environmentally...
Ford 100e :-) I like, but could I stop myself turning it into a dragster?
Imp err not my cup of tea
Escort mk2 = 4 door only at my money :-( otherwise hell yeah :-)
GT6 another nice thought. I'd have to have the tin top though
Volvo, well after you posted it 3 times I just had to have a look. That is stunning. Never seen one in the flesh though.
This is turning into quite a bit of fun. I think I'm leaning towards the Popular, the Volvo or the GT6.
Volvosport, have you seen this thread

?
2cv, they rock!!!
yeah , and unfortubately for me , if i do get an amazon , its so easy to upgrade , that i wouldnt be able to stop myself .!!
Morris Minor is cheap, 30+mpg (just), and is certainly not fast!
quote:Mini's were 1st produced in 1959 and there were over 5.5 million sold so not a problem!

Sorry Donut, I stand corrected. Probably the most sensible choice :-)

triumph vitesse 2l mk2
like this
tho not that one as its mine and not for sale
roughly 28 to the gallon
tax free
got a roof
most fun with clothes on
interesting
easy to work on
under 2k you must be joking
Old diesel landy (or a mk3 with an age related plate attached
Ok, not 30mpg, but using chip shop oil you can make it for 20 to 30p a litre (legally - ur allowed to make up to 2500l for personal use) means the
20mpg it does do becomes a whopping 60 to 100mpg!!!!!!!!!
it aint fast but its cheap as chips and dead simple to work on. I came VERY close to buying one except i need something a little quicker.
i read somewhere you can build your own car and race it for just £250

well a mk3 cortina you could get one to do 30mpg ..
i had a 2.0 pinto in my capri with a ported sand polished head and an fr32 cam on a recently rebuilt bottom end thast i kept on top of in terms of
servicing etv and i was using a properly jetted 38dgas and i got it up to 38mpg on the motorway and about 27 round town
altho if you boot it everywhere you can get it down to 14 round town lol
Has to be a Volvo Amazon......
Reliant scimitar cheap as chips but don’t think the essex 6v wil do 30 mpg lol
could put a 1300 pinto in it?
