Seeing as the value of old Sierras have gone from 1p to £150, and a length of copper pipe in B&Q cost a fortune these days I'm wondering about this whole recycling lark.

We have a box donated by Sunderland City council that me and the lad fill with aluminum cans every weekend. Without the amber nector in them they weigh next to bugger all BUT seeing as the council take them is it worth me crushing them and weighing them in myself?

I know it will take ages to get a worthy weight but the cash may as well be in my pocket

Anyone do anything similar and will the scrappy take them???

Anyone have any idea of the price of scrap aluminium at the moment , should give you some idea if you can weigh an empty can.Reminds me I have a load of scrap to weigh in.

I was recently thinking exactly the same thing, the council must be doing well out of providing this service to us and fining people that dont put it in the right bins.
I took a load of scrap metal to the tip recently as i couldnt be bothered weighing it in, but think im going to dump it all at the bottom of the garden and keep it for when i have enough from now on.
I am also considering removing my gas fire and re commisioning the fire place so i can burn all the combustible waste paper card etc, i remember ages ago you could get a paper log moulding device that could compress waste paper to make blocks that burnt slowly.I will then be collecting all my cardboard, newspapers etc and leaving nothing for the council.

Indeed! I was walking past a skip full of old plywood the other day. I wondered how much I could save by burning it in the hearth. I could also make use of all the junk mail I get stuck through my mailbox every day!! At the moment it gets shredded and put onto the compost heap.... (except the credit card forms which are pre-authorised and have my details already printed on them for some scammer to sign on my behalf- those get sent back (unsigned and usually with the rest of the days junk mail) in the pre-paid envelope)....

good ally is 4000 per tonne, my mate said just yesterday. He has a yard full of ally heads and manifolds! Alloy wheels arent pure aluminium.
