My local motor factors
clairetoo - 3/6/08 at 04:26 PM

How good is your nearest good old fashioned local motor factor ? I just popped into mine to ask the price of rear wheel bearing kits for my Mk 2 escort axle - and he had a full set on the shelf , for the princely sum of £10
They are now sat in the kitchen waiting to be fitted - how cool is that

One of these days I'm gonna remember to take my camera with me to "Arnies" at Creswell, a few on here must know who I mean.

I'm no spring chicken and my memories of the place go all the way back to childhood, and......... still hanging behind the counter is a chain link steering wheel that as been hung there for the best part of 40 years to my knowledge........

Arnie is now long gone his Mrs "Rene" is still about and does she know here cars......

Go in and ask her for a "rear brake shoes 1964 ford anglia" she will disappear under counter you will hear and see things been slung about all over then she will reappear with the exact part you require, no part numbers, probably no box, just exactly what you want.

Call in at lunch time and you will be had for the pub run, one of the lads will be off down to pub with one of those milkmans carry things and back it will come with 12pts of best in it.........

Whenever I go there SWIMBO knows I will be gone hours whatever I have gone for, there will be others around the country I'm sure but "Arnie Smiths" will be firmly in the top 3 of good old fashioned local motor factors. A legend and a true social event when you visit.

I could write a book on the things I have seen there.

Give Champion Motor Spares a ring in Bradford, they might have a gasket in stock, they have escort mk2 brake bits and headlight units on the shelf, they're great

My local scrappy, Silverlakes, is a rip off! They wanted more for a second hand gearbox worm than a new one from fords!

I bought a headlight off them, they sold me the one on the wrong side and tried to explain I was fitting it incorrectly.

Plonkers.

I drive to the otherside of southampton now for my bits.

My local factors used to be good but the old guy sold it to a bunch of gonks. They employ loads of folks and concequently, all the prices went up. An you always end up getting the wrong thing. I recently enquired about a 7" sealed beam unit. They had one but it was £15 plus VAT. I phoned another place 20 miles away and they charged me £5 and even delivered it!

The best place I ever went was to Rodley motors in Bradford who were american specialists. The brother in law had a 1947 Studebaker champion, which needed a head gasket. we went thinking we would need to order it but was taken up stairs by an old guy who went to a pile and pulled one out brand new. He also mentioned he had a brand new carb as well did we want that. this is 1980 but 25 all in.

Went to local Ford agent yesterday for a wiper blade for a Focus - parts guy has a computer

Took 5 mins to do search to find part no
5 mins to find it
5 mins to take unnecessary stuff like my postcode
15 mins to get card payment authorised.

whole point of going to Ford agent was to get genuine Ford part but it turned out to be one size fits many generic blade

Should have gone to my nice tyre, brake and exhaust place 100 yards away where they source almost any part within 2 hours And they take cash
