Fire - Fire Extinguishers
carpmart - 24/7/08 at 03:32 PM

As per this thread http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=93871

Why don't we have a group buy on some extinguishers? I have no idea where to get them from but I'm sure someone on here must have a good source? Happy to purchase three if someone knows where we can procure them from?

Dangle_kt - 24/7/08 at 03:53 PM

I'd be interested (price dependant!)

theconrodkid - 24/7/08 at 03:59 PM

lidl (do i have shares in them?) do them from time to time, dry powder at about £10 and big enough to put an average fire out

Andy B - 24/7/08 at 04:06 PM

I have an account with lifeline for the plumbed in systems we put in the race cars, they also do a handheld version, should be able to get a good deal on a bulk buy when I order our next load if its any use to you guys, just need to know numbers and type

Andy

The 6kg powder one from Lidl for £12.99 was amazing value for money - unfortunately they never done them again at that price

Lidl can do very cheap ones, espically if you dont need them to be certified. Although i would also get one that was certified anyway.

Keep meaning to get a big foam or water one for the boat. We have three 2kg dry powder ones (58ft narrowboat) but these make such a bleeping go awfull mess/dust when used in a confined space if we did ever have a minor fire i would always think twice and consdier grabbing a bucket before actaully letting one off, which clearly inst a good thing!

Plus its no unknown to get the odd minor smolder going on if someons been careless with the the fire tools again. Although only one person was stupid enough to a fireiron onto a load of polystirine!

I would be interested in a group buy for a good plumbed in system... I would suggest keeping it simple, and only having one type.. Trouble is finding someone that wants the hassle of sorting out the group buy..

Practical Classics did an intersting review of fire extinguishers recently. All the different grades of extinguishers.

Clearly carbon dioxide is the most preferable because it doesn't shag up carbs etc. But it's not cheap!!!

The little powder ones are only worth using on very small fires. they run out of puff pretty quickly by all accounts (PC tested them against a small amount of petrol in a beaker).....

TOO BADD - 24/7/08 at 05:42 PM

I would be interested in a decent plumbed in system

David Jenkins - 24/7/08 at 06:26 PM

I'd be interested in a CO2 one that was not too big...
...again, dependent on price!

cheers,
David

Iwill get a price for a bulk buy on a couple of plumbed in systems, we tend to favour the AFFF (aqueos film forming foam) type, it doesnt make the mess that Dry powder does and doesnt have the cost implications of CO2, used this stuff during my 22 years in the Fire Service it has really good knock down effect and resists burnback
Once I have some quotes i will post them on here - I could then take orders for for systems up to a cut off date and then order them up if that meets with everyones satisfaction
obviously no mark up on these price will be exactly what I can get them for
Have to go to Ireland this weekend on business so will post up prices next week
regards
Andy

Thanks Andy, thats exactly the 'spirit' of my original post.

Can you also check for prices of a handheld one as well?

owelly - 24/7/08 at 09:31 PM

I got a few out of date extinguishers from the CHUBB guy who comes to my work. He reckons most large FAFFA companies are only too happy to give them away!!
They are still pressurised and can still be inspected but they are not suitable for insurance inspections.

jambojeef - 24/7/08 at 10:13 PM

Halfords are doing little-uns (500g powder) for £12.99 at the moment, down from £19.99.

I've strapped one into the motor for our ring trip, been meaning to do it for ages.

I know they last all of 2 secs but its gonna be better than nothing.

Ive got a load of normal building powder and foam extinguishers that i might be willing to sell.... What is it people are after, and how many? If someone collates a spreadseet and sends it over, ill see what ive ot. I know i havent got CO2 though.

Best other places for smaller extinguishers is camping or caravan shops....

Jasper - 16/8/08 at 03:00 PM

I'd be interested in plumbed in too....

iiyama - 9/9/08 at 07:20 AM
