ta - well, I never knew that.

To rub salt into wounds, drivers will have to a pay £17.50 to renew their card - a charge which critics have condemned as a 'stealth tax' and which will earn the Treasury an estimated £437million over 25 years.

well you learn something new everyday!! I'd never even looked to be honest.

Top warning thanks a bunch.

MikeCapon - 11/9/08 at 02:51 PM

Er, I've still got my green paper licence issued in 1987 and it say's its valid until 2027. Is there something I should know here?

smart51 - 11/9/08 at 02:55 PM

Is the daily sodding mail at it again? Trust them to turn a minor irritation into a national disaster. Notice how they have to multiply the money up by 25 years to get a "scandlous" figure?

Do you really expect a photo of you at 17 to last on your driver's licence until you are 70? Of course you have to renew the photo card. £17.50 is a fairly reasonable admin charge. The treasury isn't making £400,000,000,000,000 pounds profit out of us.

iank - 11/9/08 at 02:57 PM

Actually I think the real issue is they aren't sending reminder letters. DVLA do for MOTs so why not for the photocards?

A1 - 11/9/08 at 02:58 PM

*both hands up*

what a surprise-yet another tax on motorists...

b*stards

Fozzie - 11/9/08 at 03:09 PM

I still have my old paper licence too...... they don't expire until you are 70 ......unless you move house or change your name........

After reading that I will hang on to it too!

Fozzie

Well as my old boss used to say

"the gates are never locked, you can leave at any time"

If you don't like this country move to another one. Once you've seen how the poor people live Britain doesn't look so bad.

Were did you get £400,000,000,000,000 from? is only £437,000,000 and that's just a years wage for me not!

I made an entirely true statement. It is no more an exaggeration than the newspaper article.

adithorp - 11/9/08 at 03:33 PM

"tiny print"...well its the same size as your name and address.
"unknown to the motorist"...if you can't be arsed to read the notes that come with it.
"L candidates can take test with passport ID"...loads of them in that position that have taken over 10 years to learn to drive.
"stealth tax"...why should I fund the cost of you getting your licence renewed out of my pay packet?
Daily Mail (aka Rupert Murdock) policy; Don't let the truth get in the way of a good lie/story.

There are no reminders for MOTs (except possibly from the garage you had your last one done at).

And DVLA are sending out reminders about licence expiry, it's just that people who haven't kept their address up to date won't get the reminder (which is entirely their own fault).

I would imagine they were talking about tax/SORN reminders!

Quite right, I meant Tax but typed MOT
If they are sending out reminders then the people getting caught are just numpties as you say.

So the only issue is charging £17.50 for something that costs about 50p to manufacture.

What's more disturbing is that Conrodkid admits to reading the Daily Mail!
It's just an extreme right wing tool of the Conservative party and mostly tosh.

Fozzie - 11/9/08 at 05:28 PM

Just my view of course....

but.......

I have yet to read any daily including broadsheet, that does not lean toward either, Tory/Labour/Liberal/Independent... be it left wing, right wing, or one that changes with the weather... depending on the day of the week!....

and whats wrong with being right wing?
the looney left has done us no favours and is too keen to surrender our once proud country to all and sundry.
