Question for a welder!
Chippy - 9/10/08 at 09:59 PM

Hi, I tried to weld an R1 can onto my S/S exhaust pipe, and as you can see from the attached picture it definately didn't work, the weld seems to have cristalised. I have welded many S/S items in the past and never had a problem, well at least not like this. Any idea's why it should happen??????? Cheers Ray.

Your R1 can pipework is Titanium

Is an R1 can titanium?

(Titanium gives off brilliant white sparks if touched with a grinder.)

as above, thought they were made of titanium

Well if it is Titanium, (although must say it "looks" like S/S), can it be welded, and if so how? Ray

Early R1 Cans (4XV) are stainless with a carbon sleeve, and then changed to titanium sleeves & pipework 2000-2001 (5JJ)

Not to stainless Ray

I have chopped two R1 cans now, both stainless.

Are you using TIG ? For a proper job you should backgas but as its thick I never bothered and mine have both been fine.

If you drill the rivits and knock off the ali cover the tube is welded to a mild steel case.

nb/ Titanium is just the end cap on a GSXR can, they do not make these out of this stuff as its expensive, just have little finishers... then call it a Titanium can !

On A 5JJ exhaust can only the top end cap below the ali cover is mild steel (tailpipe end), the bottom one is titanium just like the pipework

maximill666 - 9/10/08 at 10:34 PM

As Paul G said, unfortunately NO

Titanium cannot be fusion welded to stainless steel.

Might empty your pockets though

What about soildering them together that should work? but you'l need to slip one inside the othwer a bit and I'd say use silver soilder too which is expensive

wilkingj - 10/10/08 at 12:09 PM

Split the pipe, insert a sleve, and two Jubilee Clips (or similar) to secure.

What else can you do if it cant be welded?

Chippy - 10/10/08 at 10:22 PM

Have hacked one can about and I think I have the solution. I have drilled out the rivets, removed the end cap. Ground away the tail pipe completely, and drilled out the rivets that hold the titanium plate to the steel inner. I am now going to make a stainless plate that will rivet back into the six holes with the piece of S/S pipe welded to that, jobs a good un! (hopefully) :-) Cheers Ray
