I fitted my new wheels and tyres last night. (More on that later).

Anyway when I took the passenger side rear wheel off, the top surface of the rear diffuser had a patch of oil on it. Directly beneath the passenger side diff oil seal, which has a drip mark of oil on it.

I have no time to replace before Stoneleigh, so just chucked 100ml more oil in there and will chance it.

How difficult is replacing the oil seal? Haynes book of lies suggests take rear wheel / drive shaft off. Lever it out then hammer in with a "suitable" drift.

The levering out bit? Do I need a 6' breaker bar?

The hammering in with a "suitable drift" do I need a Steam Hammer?

Is it in the scope of a man in his garage, or should I take it to my local garage??

Not too hard to do in your garage. Depending on how quick you can remove you drive shaft it should only take 2hrs max.
Think i have a spare new oil seal (push in shaft 1.6 sierra diff)

I've discovered exactly the same problem Mike on the same side !

I don't think you'll need to bring out the heavy tools - should be relatively straight forward - upright off, drive shaft out, lever out old seal with small pry bar or old bent screwdriver, knock new one in with a piece of pipe only just smaller than the outside diameter of the seal.

Do you know the part number ?

If it's a push in drive shaft then the part number is 6107894 and cost approx £5.20.

Removal I ended up buying a seal remval tool like a small ice pick as it was one of the first jobs I did and didn't have a clue. To replace I used a socket just slightly smaller than the diameter of the seal.

If I can do it then anyone can.

It's an epidemic..

Are the seals the same for both sides. If they are id recommend buying too. Spare in case you bugger the firstr one up sussing out the diy fitting method, and if you dont bugger it up it will come in right for the other side one day. I always find if you have these things in stock they never go wrog. The day you chuck it out or give it away you will need it urgently.
