Pinto 170 bhp

What would you expect a pinto with 170 bhp to run like
Has been described as running lumpy on tick over
Would it be ok to drive in normal road conditions ie traffic
And what sort of mpg with these mods

thursty, runs like a pig at low revs till it gets to its power band and a real pain in traffic

Thatl probably have high lift cams in so it will be lumpy until the cams are on power.

like a bag of crap below 3-4K but above that fantastic

I used to get annoyed with a 285 cam in a 2.1 pinto ~ 140bhp driving through town, it was a PITA, lurch change gear, change back....

It was fine on the open road

Have to disagree, mine was fine at low revs, ticked over nicely and pulled very well right to 7500 rpm and was nearer to 200 bhp than 170 bhp

Don't use a high lift race cam, use a fast road cam like a kent FR33 or similar.

Ditto, though mine was around 160/170.

All depends on how you set it all up as well.

my pinto is fine, bit lumpy not alot tho and power band really kicks in like a vtech crap on low revs. i want to get my rr correctly set up but cant find anywhere.

omega0684 - 3/9/09 at 09:43 PM

i have to disagree as well im afraid, i have no problems with low revs, ticks over about 850-900 quite happily, my power band is 2500-7000 on my cam and i have no issues plodding along at 30, 40 or 50. the only thing i would say is that its hardly got any torque if i put my foot down from cruising at 40 in 5th, but if a downshift to 3rd and floor it, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

do you know what cam you've got Alex ?

I think, if the engine is in a heavy car, it will be a bit of a pig around town. In a 600kg Locost you will hardly notice the sluggishness at low revs, but when on the cam, it will really fly.

I think the question is why would you bother tuning a Pinto to that extent when a 2.0L Zetec would reach it with far less tuning, and a 20XE would easily reach that in standard form with decent fueling and exhaust and be much nicer engines for road use.

for me that was 25 years ago in a capri, same power on the RR as my mates 3ltr capri so I moved on and got a 3.1 with holley... much better, no substitute for cubes
