MK Indy Engine Options
Dan. - 17/9/09 at 06:38 PM

Hi all,
I have recently purchased a part built indy and I am looking to choose an engine for it.

I have narrwed it down to a list of 4 but feel free to throw any other suggestions into the mix.

1) Volvo T5 engine & box, chipped to 300HP £500-700 (no heavier than a pinto too!)

2) 2nd hand pinto obviously cheap & I have gearbox already

3) 2nd hand zetec, cheap again and box will fit.

4) new zetec £700 off ebay

The original plan was the T5 lump as it offers silly power cheaply, however having spoken to th previous owner of this indy he did not think it was such a good idea to run that much HP in a 7, he stated others who run big HP often are no quicker (or slower) than people running less as they constantly spinn up the rear tyres.

Anyway if anyone who has run big HP in a 7 could comment on their experiences too it would be appreciated.

Duratec...need I say more?

Staple balls - 17/9/09 at 06:41 PM

The zetec wouldn't be one from robinkitlolocostpartsdirecthood, would it?

Not sure how they are on engines, but they don't have a good reputation for anything else.

Stick with your origonal plan...remember this simple equation, more power = more fun

Hellfire - 17/9/09 at 06:56 PM

T5 turbo,go for it,and have some fun

Staple balls - 17/9/09 at 07:01 PM

The T5 strikes me as a very silly idea.

Do it.

DRC INDY 7 - 17/9/09 at 07:14 PM

CEC

It's the only way plus you get a free reverse gear

Dan. - 17/9/09 at 07:24 PM

looks like the T5 is winning so far, anyone who has answered had a 7 with similar power?

Edit: you guys are a bad influence...

Ignore the 'spinning up the tyres' stuff......usually spouted by low powered, stuck in their ways owners lol.

saying that, my personal preference would be 200bhp, 4 cylinder NA in a 7 .

tomgregory2000 - 17/9/09 at 08:04 PM

Turbo power all the way!!!!!
YeeeeeeeeeeeeHaaaaaaaaaaaaa

afj - 17/9/09 at 08:17 PM

well i vote for none of the above and say honda s2000

Blackcab - 17/9/09 at 08:19 PM

Most of the components you have will be fine up to and a little over 200bhp, go for the Zetec, my new one has the 2.0 zetec and its plenty fast enough

Hope you managed to unload it ok

nick205 - 17/9/09 at 08:26 PM

IIRC matt_claydon and Benzine on here both swapped from Pinto to T5 motors in their Indys.

Might be worth contacting them for some first hand info.

That said my choice would be a new Zetec.

XE, clearly. Anyone who says different is simply insane

graememk - 17/9/09 at 09:00 PM

nissan ca18det, comes with gearbox too

RK - 17/9/09 at 09:07 PM

second the ca18det, although it does take a lot of room, it is cheap to put 300 HP out of it apparently. Standard form without the 2 1/2 " exhaust and cold air intake, you get about 170.

LBMEFM - 18/9/09 at 05:35 AM

You da man Hellfire, BEC BEC BEC BEC BEC BEC BEC BEC BEC BEC BEC BEC BEC BEC then you will have lots of these when you drive Barry (Who wants to go backwards - anyway the only way is forward)

Davey D - 18/9/09 at 06:26 AM

If going Turbo it say SR20DET from a 200sx.

If staying n/a, then get a 2.0 duratec mated to MX5 gearbox

DarrenW - 18/9/09 at 01:12 PM

Im not voyting as its up to you what you go for. However one piece of advice i would say, speaking from experience, is go for the engine you really want now rather than later.
I fitted a pinto with a view to going 16V later, big mistake as i ended up spending too much on the pinto by the time it had bike carbs, full exhaust, rebuilt and ported head etc etc. I could have fitted VX XE for almost same money.

If people say the engine you want has too much power - then dont put your foot down as far. Wind the throttle cable back a bit etc. Power will be useful one day.

jpindy3 - 18/9/09 at 08:10 PM

go for the t5,turbo kitcars are so much fun, plus you can run rings around most things on the road.

correct

PS power is one thing, power delivery quite another!!

That Opel Kadett I keep rattling on about on here constantly reminds me of this fact!!

its 400hp, in 750kg, fine, nowt earth shattering, but the problem is it goes from 150hp to 350hp in about a 500rpm jump, or so it feels, and as soon as the power comes on, it spins up, in any gear, on any surface.

on a glued track at santa pod it found something else to spin and burnt the 6 paddle, cerametallic, 300% uprated clutch to bits............

Turbos have to be used with knowledge, particularly that when you are in the mood, they are great fun, but when the non-turbo car in front keeps getting away from you, it can be a right bugger to hang on!

I have 200hp non-turbo in the form of vauxhall XE, and around 540kg weight wise. I think in that sort of weight, 250hp would be nice, 200 is not quite enough, though obviously still ridiculously quick, 0-60 under 4 secs etc, just that mid range acceleration could be a bit better with a bit more torque and more top end power.

clear as mud!

Volvorsport - 19/9/09 at 11:36 AM

an old redblock will do 300 hp on std internals .

you dont have to go t5 turbo - fitting a nasper 5 cyl 2.5 20v will net 170 hp - can be chipped to 190 hp on std software .

youll be ok on a type 9 box like that with the ability of close ratio gearbox without mega money , unless you can find a cossie box .

jenvey make the manifolds for ITB setups on the later type variable valve heads .

anybody who says anything else , is completely insane !!
