pinto oil pressure and water temperature
Barksavon - 6/3/10 at 07:18 PM

Ive got a rebuilt 2.0 l pinto in a Tiger Avon that ive taken out for its first run today. Engine went ok but a couple of things concerning me. First is oil pressure which when the engine is hot drops down to about 30 psi at idle, when i'm revving the engine it rises to around 65 psi....is 30 psi at idle too low (the oil pressure light doesnt come on) Second is water temp, the gauge is climbing to 100 - 110 cent before the fan kicks in, its not boiling over but seems a bit high compared to the 1600pinto i had in the car last year. Ive got top rad hose to big outlet on thermo hsg, small o/let on thermo hsg feeds back to exp bottle. O/let from bottom of exp bottle to small inlet at btm of rad. Large btm rad o/let to water pump and small o/let from water pump to inlet manifold. The rad top hose gets hot before the bottom one.....have i got this plumbed in correctly.

start by fitting a new 88c thermostat
such as ebay item 120516610829

Also check the ignition timing isn't excessively retarded.

Fan cut in temperature is determined solely by the fan switch, fit a lower temperature switch if you want it to cut in at a lower temp.

The oil pressure sounds spot on to me,dont worry about it.My rebuilt 2.0 pinto had 25 psi at idle and 60 psi when driving, with the engine hot.
My fan kicked in at 91 deg and switched off at 85deg.

30psi at idle sounds about right.

The best stat to fit is an 82 deg one from a zetec fiesta thats the only way I could keep temps under control on mine.

i have got an 88deg stat on mine fan cuts in around 101deg pintos are fine running hot being cast iron block and head it all warms up and moves together unlike ali heads.

as for oil pressure my dad has been a mechanic for 35odd years and says. "only worry if it hasnt got any"

Thanks for the replies, feeling less concerned about it now:

As quoted, mine idles at about 25-30psi when good and hot and 60-70psi at speed. I heard somewhere that 10psi per 1000 rpm wasn't a bad minimum ball park figure....

Just fitted the above 82deg stat to mine and seems to be OK idling, still to try it on the road though......
