Any tips on how to squeeze under emission limits?
Paradoxia0 - 23/4/10 at 02:02 PM

Hi

Taking the car for an MOT this afternoon and wondered if anyone has any tips to squeeze under emissions limits if it is a bit high?

The engine is a 4.2 Rover V8

I think increase idle speed is one, and (at a push) retard the ignition to make it run hotter and cleaner but any other (easy) ones anyone can think of?

take it to a small local garage...

I thought a Q plate was visual test only?

As did I...

If you have a cat fitted then I guess you need to get it as hot as possible before the test.

Otherwise, as A1 said, find a small friendly local garage...

Nope, Q plate is by DVLA and emissions are by VOSA. The whole Q plate / visual emissions thing only applies to pre IVA/SVA cars.

are you sure, im on a Q and dont have any emissions stated on my v5 so i must be visual smoke test only as there are no figures to go by?

iscmatt - 23/4/10 at 04:12 PM

i have 3.5% stated on my Q plate v5 and so i have to get under the limit, luckily my garage is a friendly place and as the readings read 3.4% and fluctuated up to almost 4% he took the nozzle out, put it back on the machine and carried on with the test. (must have been happy with the first reading )

tomgregory2000

look on the front of your V5 in the extra notes section

Mot depends on whether the computer has the notes added or the MOT station are aware of what to do. Some will just do the somoke check if the computer does not tell the any limits.

Mark, is it an EFI or Carb set up.

on the webber you just need to turn the idle mixture screws ( 2 of them ) in to reduce the emissions ( lean it off a little)

what is the ruling about taking the revs up to 3k revs? Or is that just CO?

Paradoxia0 - 23/4/10 at 09:22 PM

Hi Guys

Panic over, the car sailed straight through the MOT and the emissions didn't even get commented on!

Thanks for the tips!
