Disaster
jeffw - 24/4/10 at 02:11 PM

Not a happy bunny. My friend Jeff (Westfield Megabusa) and myself where on out way to a trackday at Woodbridge this morning (early doors) when my engine seized coming out of the Dartford Tunnel, I ended up parked on the Thurrock service slip off the motorway. Hoped out of the car to realise the reason I couldn't stop and the engine wouldn't run was pretty apparent.....oil every where. Lifting the bonnet to reveal the whole engine bay thick with oil. It looks like the Oil Filter has failed in some way allowing all the engine oil out very quickly.

While I was waiting for the AA to turn up I got a phone call from the other Jeff to tell me he had broken down (about 1/3 mile further on). His dry sump system hoses had failed near the engine with the result that his oil supply had dripped out causing his engine to punch two large holes through the crank case with its rods.

The most bizarre coincident.

Anyway, |'m assume my Piper 282 cams are screwed...so

Blacktop
Another Silvertop
Or the ST170 Zetec with the VVT ????

I've found a low mileage blacktop for £150.

I'm afraid the other Jeffs engine will cost a lot more. All this with being stuck in Cyprus till Thursday as well

Thats not good mate, feel for you, hope you get sorted soon.

Sorry about the bad news

Ouch! Sympathy.

Blacktop will give a bit more power than a silvertop for the same induction system.

Jeff,

Unlucky mate. Sorry to hear this.

Do you have the Renault 5 filter on your engine? Curious as some have said on here that although it fits, it's not actually quite the correct thread and hence some of the failures.

Cheers,
James

Proper Zetec oil filter.

The car has just come back from getting the gearbox rebuilt which involved engine/gearbox out and then back in again. The car had done 30 miles before the failure. This may also be a bizarre coincident or the OIl Filter may have been damaged in the removal/insertion. The company concerned are looking at the car on Monday so we will see how this pans out.

commiserations mate... but Im looking forward to seeing it back even stronger than before!

jeffw - 24/4/10 at 05:05 PM

Neat change of avatar Dan. No more Tiger No more Darren to badger just a nice STM Phoenix.

I reckon I can get a Blacktop with decent cams for £500-£750 which will be around the 200 BHP mark so not all bad.

Steve Hignett - 24/4/10 at 07:05 PM

Gutted for you (both!)

adithorp - 24/4/10 at 07:35 PM

That must be sickening.

Sounds a lot like a jammed oil presure relief valve. I've seen that blow oil filters apart before or just force the seal out.

I guess the rematch is off? Still it saves you the embarrasment!

Lol

You should be so lucky Blacktop & cams being aquired as we speak. Looking for 210BHP & 180 lb ft. The car will be back together for Llandow...with 360 BHP per tonne.

adithorp - 24/4/10 at 08:36 PM

Nice one! £150 for the engine I hear?

jeffw - 24/4/10 at 08:46 PM

Hopefully....waiting on confirmation

Fozzie - 24/4/10 at 11:23 PM

Awww that's very bad news.....commiserations to both of you....

Hope you are both up and running very soon.....

That was a very spooky coincidence indeed.....

Fozzie

dlatch - 24/4/10 at 11:37 PM

this is why i am glad i have a zetec worst comes to worst just pick up another lump for £100 and job done

i think i would cry if i lost i mega bucks engine to something so silly have neither of you got any oil pressure guages ?

anyway hope you both get them fixed asap

jeffw - 25/4/10 at 08:11 AM

We both have pressure gauges, mine went very quickly whereas the Megabusa was leaking for a long time. Problem is with a drysump system you don't see a loss of pressure until is virtually all gone.

Jeff and I have discussed fitting some sort of level sensor half way up the dry sump tank which would mitigate the risk of this happening again....big red light on the dash.

Good guess, looks like exactly what has happened, the seal has been forced out of the oil filter because of a faulty relief valve. It all happened very quickly.
