Sump Shortening

This is a job that ive been avoiding for months now!
Any tips or hints?
WHats the ideal clearance i need?
how much do i shorten the suction pipe by?

The sump needs to be no shorter than the bottom of the gearbox bellhousing.
If you take 50mm of the sump you need to shorten the pickup 50mm

Shorten the sump to the same height as the gearbox bellhousing, shorten the pickup pipe by exactly the same amount as you remove from the sump.

I have done a 'how to' pdf on how to shorten a Pinto sump, but cannot attach it in this thread - bugger, u2u me your email address and I will send it over

that rhocar thing with the box welded on the side just stops the clutch cable operating smoothly, mine doesn't

Hi, remeber to add baffle plates, i left mine out and blew up 2 engines before i realised.

When you've done it, sit it on a newspaper and fill it up with parafin or water and leave over night, check in the morning for any leaks. It took me a few attempts to grind back and reweld to plug the leak.

Turn the amps up as high as you can handle and turn the wire feed down almost to the point where the wire is 'balling back' to the tip

As Richard says, check for leaks, and when found (and you will ) grind back to the hole and re-weld. Takes a while but the best way. Another tip I read somewhere (on here IIRC) is to start the weld off on a pice of scrap next to the intended weld area because welding starts off 'cold' and makes the weld porous.
