Have got a ford 4 speed gearbox, supposedly from a 1600 pinto. Bolt on bell housing, length overall 30.5"(same as a N type). Cast on gearbox 8.4.74, G55266, 71WG-7006 (KA).Is this a type C / single rail gearbox? anyone any idea of ratios? I understand that if this is a type C then ratios are better suited to a Locost. Does anyone have any advice to offer?

Looking at the gearbox pics in my burton cat it looks like a type E, cortina/sierra/escort 1.6 and 2.0 pinto's

Anyone have strong views as to the suitibility of the ratios for fast road 1600 xflow powered book chassis? Or stick with standard xflow box?

Looks like a Cortina/Capri box fitted to some 1600 and most UK built 2 litres.

Two tests to do
(1) Check the number of splines on the input shaft.
(2) Put it in 1st gear mark the splines on input and ouputshaft with a dot of "Typex" and turn the input shaft until the output shaft completes one revolution find the first gear ratio (a lower the numeric ratio is better for a light powerful car)
