advise wanted, i am using a radiator without a radiator cap so have connected it to a mk4 escort expansion tank which is used to fill the radiator.Do i have to connect the overflow pipe back into the cooling system or can i just leave it to vent out?

this is what i did........

larger hose from expansion bottle "T" into btm hose....

smaller hose from therm housing to top of bottle,

these are the only two pies i connected to bottle....

hope that helps a little....
