Hi folks,

I just need some insight as I am a novice in this area. I am running a 1.8cvh in my car and noted some what looks like 'milky stuff' under my
oil cap. It is not allot at all, but just wondering. Now I've heard it might be the head gasket gone. Can this be the case ?If it is a matter of replacing
the head gasket or is there a alternative. Any insight welcomed?

have you noticed any thing in the oli / on dipstick ?
some times what you have seen can just be a result of condensation.

Nothing on the dipstick....normal oil

Sounds to me like nothing to worry about. Take the rocker cover off, scrape it all off, change the oil and filter.

(1) Do you have a thermostat fitted. ?
(2) Do you have adequate breathers on the cam cover. ?

if its just on the cap it will pribably condensation build up, remove all breather pipes and clean or replace, on the CVH engines fitted to FWD escorts they where reknow for blockages and prevented proper braething

The cvh was notorious for this - highly unlikely to be head gasket, usually simply the result of short journeys, cheap oil, inadequate oil changes etc. Check that all the breathers are clear & that the pcv valve is clean & has a decent vacuum sucking thro' it, bung a flush in with the oil & then do oil & filter change.

If it does turn out to be the head gasket its not a huge or dear job on a cvh.

I had the very same problem about 3 weeks ago( same engine as yourself ), & also thought the worst ( head gasket ), I also asked for advice over on the Haynes forum & did just as everyone on here has suggested.

I changed the oil & filter, cleaned all breather pipes, took rocker cover off & made sure it was totally clean,

I,ve since run the engine up a few times ( up to temp ) & had no further Milky white stuff, so , was relieved it wasn,t the head gasket.
