I'm sure I've seen mention of a method of removing the rubber bit in the middle of a type 9 lever to make it shorter, but haven't been able to find anything by searching, has anyone got any info?

Really I'd like my gearknob to be about where the rubber bit is so I don't smash my knuckles on the dash every 30 seconds!

on my box I heated the lever with a blow torch and it fell apart . watch out for thick smoke and hot goo

I used my angle-grinder to cut a couple of slots up the side and heaved the top bit off in the vice. The rubber is easy to hack of the lower bit.

I did the same as Dave, phew did that rubber smoke and smell bad as the angle grinder cut into it !!!!

Can't imagine how bad using a blow torch would be.

Wasn't shortening the gear lever/ converting to quick shift and extending the gear lever remote posted by Dave Blisset?? I converted mine, extending it backwards about 5 inchs at the vast expense of about 90p now I can reach the gear lever easily without hitting the dash . Hope this helps Rusty

I just chopped the lever below and above the rubber bit and welded them back together. There seems to be a lot of talk about shortening the tiop half, moving the pivot point and lengthening the bit below the pivot to make a quick shift. Simply shortening the top has the same effect!

i chopped thru the middle of the rubber bit, added a new bit leant more forward (my gearbox is a LONG way back...) and then welded a small bar over the remains of the rubber bit to stop the wobble. Believe me, that did stink! But it worked...
