I've been trying to get the backlash correct, now from a online manual and searching on here, i read it should be 0.01 about half a thou? the best i can get is about 0.04 so 2 thou?

if i try and reduce it i can feel a bit of binding(same point all the time) as i turn the crownwheel to pinion
i guess a nice smooth diff is more important that trying to get 0.01 backlash?

ps i am reading my gauge correctly?

Personally I would go with a little binding, going 'loose' will allow the gears to chatter, as the diff is loaded up the crown wheel and diff will flex and try to seperate , a trick to stop diff’s from shattering under heavy load due to this is to restrict the crownwheel flexing by placing phosphor bronze pads behind the crown wheel to control the movement.

Hey Mark, the binding is really only noticable if i'm turning the crownwheel by hand rather than turning the pinion
so maybe i can wind it up a bit untill it feels tight turning the pinion to crownwheel and re-check with the gauge
