Where can I find info on fabricating crankcases? Searched yahoo and just found a little bit of info on model airplane engines. Any info will be
helpful
-Thanks
I once made a gearbox casing for a MOD prototype, not told what for, but it was 400mmx500mmx600mm so I guessed for an APC or similar. The actual item
was destined to be cast, but the pt was made from 28mm EN8 plate, fully gusseted, bearing rings welded on, stress relieved in a big oven for 2 days
and beadblasted when cooled. It was then linebored. The interior was painted with oil resisting paint, and all the threaded holes were helicoiled
(seemed like overkill).
Oh yes, the outside was painted in brunswick green!
Sounds cool. Anybody got any websites or more input??
on a similar vein, i was thinking of converting an old diesel engine into a 2 stroke tdi. Sounded fun at the time.
As for scratch building a crankcase, i dont have a clue. Maybe find a good machinist and ask them some questions? People in the know will include
those who make cranks, pistons heads etc, so there must be lots of info out there.

I might have a go with a V8 from 2 bike engines in a year or two. Apparently the TVR V12 block was fabricated, maybe still is?? I was going to make it
like an inverted boat with a "keel" between the cylinder banks and "bulkheads" for the 5 mains plus big "chines" (??)
round the outside to screw a sump onto. (Lets not get into transoms) and LOTs of TIG welding... Heat treat (dunno how) then machine the mains using a
mate's vertical miller amongst other stuff.
Sorry no drawings - it's all in me head at the moment.
It could all go bang in such a big way.....
complete step into the unknown!
cheers
Bob
Trying to get a mental picture on how you'd do the mains. hmm. I wish I knew of some websites that go into the details of a similar buildup, just to get a good picture in my minds eye. That would be the 1st step for me...
BTW, these are about all I could dig up with yahoo. Maybe I'm serching the wrong terms?? Not very helpful, but along the same lines in a much
samller scale...
