You need to push down on the gear stick to get it into reverse too

Yep, spot on, redeye - push down, to the left and forward ( alongside first )! If you keep getting 4th, you're heading the wrong way!

Had a similar problem with a 2.0 nova conversion before, no matter how we adjusted the linkages we kept getting 3rd instead of 5th, ages we tried, then looked up the code on the box.
