Ford Type 2 gearbox problem

My Ford type 2 gearbox has a slight problem going from 2 to 3 on hard acceleration
mild aceleration is fine, but if im flooring the little xflow, i sometimes have to double clutch to get it into 3rd
Coming back down the box seems fine

Any ideas's?

Would think its probably the baulk ring, blocker bar or possibly just general wear issues, a rebuild looks to be on the cards.

Ran these boxes for years, even with an 1860 175 bhp x-flow never had an issue with a properly fettled box, way better than a type 9 on a x-flow, don't be tempted to change.

Are you sure it was a type 2 Esscort box and not the very similar looking Mk3 & Mk4 Cortina 1300 and 1600 box which also had similar integral case & bellhousing?

The original type 2 box in the Mk1 escort could barely take the power of the 1300 xflo, Ford upgraded it a bit for the mk2 because the Mk2 had 1600 xflo and 1600 Pinto versions.

Absolutely 100% certain it was a Type 2 box. Yes they were not exactly the strongest box in the world but in a lightweight car like a 7 they can take a lot more power than they can in the much heavier Escort. Ford did not upgrade the internals between the Mk1 and mk 2 Escorts, they are identical. The so called "Heavy duty" version from the 1600 sport was exactly the same as far as bearings and syncros went but had a one piece alloy tailcase. All the "sport" versions (1300 and 1600 - only the 1600 had the 1 piece tail casing) had slightly closer ratios, rocking horse poo now, not exactly common 23 years ago. The standard box was sold to a racing aquaintance as a spare. I then ran a Quaiffe version of the box when I took to the hills and circuits more seriously and that was the best box I have ever had. It was built in the standard box without the one piece tail case (could not locate a cheap 1600 doner box) and in 5 years of competition all I replaced was a front bearing as a precaution. When I moved onto big slicks I decided I had better upgrade and fitted a quaiffe Type E box with an experiemental alloy casing, that was a nice box as well. Sold the Type 2 quaiffe Box to a mate , he ran it for several years before selling the car.

The Mk 2 Mexico used a Type E box not the Type 2 as did the Mk1 and Mk RS2000.

Mine, i am 99% sure its a type 2, as from a 1300 mk2 escort 1979 vintage

David Bartholomew, ex Locost race champ, rebuilds these gearboxes. You should find him on here somewhere.
