I have replaced my gearbox and rather than fit the old gear selector rod extension, I was wondering if it is possible to modify the original screw in
gear lever by cutting it and welding 8 inches of steel rod (see below).
Has anyone done this and does it work?

You may end up with a loose feeling gearbox and if unlucky it will drop out of 1st 3rd on rough roads, if the gear stick is heavy you may also load
the bulk rings in the box.
Not the best idea then, but many do this anyway.

My type 9 lever has a 3" piece similar to the one you are proposing and it works well, has done for about 9 years now. But inserting 8" will
make for a very odd lever action. The knob will move in a up and down motion more than a back and forward motion. A simple sketch will prove that in
2nd and 4th the end of the 8" bar will hit the prop.
Stick with what you had, when I had a type 2 I had a parallel rod arrangement that worked pretty well but did wear on the joints occasionally.
Yeah no probs no real difference in gear change feel, the main problem, welding could melt the ball, Lotus a bolt on extension locked with roll
pins on some models.
