OMEX 600 ignition - no spark
barraw - 28/3/15 at 04:48 PM

Hello

Last weekend I took my Westfield out from winter storage, charged the battery, change the fuel and oil etc, and it started first twist of the key and ran for 30 minutes standing on the driveway ticking over quite happily. I turned it off and put it away.

Came to start it on Tuesday to take it for it's MOT - no spark to the plugs, despite a strong turnover and strong fuel pressure.

I bought a brand new Febi coil pack (£54), still no spark.

I contacted Omex, they suggested I check the following items - all checked out in the green:

The Omex 600 is powering up fine, stat sync'd is switching on when cranking, crank sensor is increasing with each rotation, and the middle pin on the coil lead is hitting 11v while cranking over.

Still no spark. Changed every relay in the car, changed every fuse.

Anyone got any ideas please?

thanks
Wayne

How are you checking for spark ?

Are you laying the spark plug on the side of the engine or using a proper spark tester ?

Any sign of a weak spark or nothing at all ?

Hi, I'm using two old fashioned spark testers. The one you place next to the HT leads and the type you insert between the lead and the plug.

thanks

Maybe worth moving the crank sensor a bit closer to the trigger wheel as I had a problem like yours with a omex 500 and it sorted the problem out .

thanks. I've ordered a new Crank sensor, to rule it out if nothing else

There's not really much else to check after that.

The ECU needs continued voltage under starting, but it sounds like you have checked for that.

If all else fails it points to a fault with the omex itself.

You haven't altered anything when connecting it up to the laptop by any chance ?

Hello, no, not even connected a laptop to it for several years until it stopped working.

I've got it connected to a Clark starter, so got a strong 12v feed.

Contacted Omex who said it's very unlikely that both coil side feeds would fail in the ECU at the same time, so I should be at least getting 2 cylinders firing if it was the ECU.

I've ordered a new crank sensor (£8 just to rule it out), but looking for another crank shaft sensor, but not sure which one the ST170 engine uses (if any ??)

I'm considering the possibility of the brand new coil pack being faulty, as well as the original, but very unlikely.

It *might* be the coil pack as it wouldn't be the first 'new' one to be faulty.

Can you connect a laptop to the ECU if needed ? Just thinking you could test the crank sensor and check a few other things if you can..

Yes, I connected a laptop this weekend for the first time in a long time, but I'm not familiar with the software. For example, it has a crank sensor error which increments each rotation of the engine, but the people at Omex indicated this means the crank sensor is working.

Just ordered a camshaft sensor for £21, so I'll get it fitted at the weekend.

I'll look for a cheap second hand coil pack - the chance of all 3 being faulty is pretty slim.

I had a crank signal but it wasn't correct reduced the sensor gap and the car started and ran correctly started as a poor or non starting when hot but got worse until it wouldn't start at all no spark was the issue but it was an Omex 500 unit and I now the gap is more critical on these ecus . The Omex website has all the info about setting up etc may be double checking the gap is correct .
