Cleaning up Stored Engine and 'Box
BigDawgV8 - 27/7/15 at 09:29 PM

Hi All,

I'm getting to the stage where I need to pull the engine and gearbox out of storage and give them a good clean up!
They are covered in general workshop (filler) dust, old oil, grease etc.

Does anyone have any recommendations for cleaning products?
I know that there are auto degreasers etc. but anything else out there to try? Oven cleaners etc.?

Thanks for reading!

steam is a good one or degreaser and jetwash bung any inlet holes etc

White spirit (or similar) works well, stand the engine in a tray and use a brush. Not too aggressive.
Jetwash good, but care required as noted above. Plus you get filthy...

We have a industrial Steam Cleaner at work and I did mine. Good for major crud but nothing beats a big tray and a stiff brush with white spirt or a tin of GUNK.

With a Pressure Washer/Steam Cleaner you just get soaked.

Pint of diesel and a stiff brush followers by a hose off
Jet wash can get into all sorts of places
