Hello all
Car ran fine last time out but went to start it this morning. Put it in reverse and it lurched back and died. Restarted it then couldn’t get it in
gear, any gear at all. Clutch pedal feels normal.
Any ideas ? Other than clutch is knackered :-(
Car is a rover v8 with an lt77 gearbox

Is it hydraulic clutch or cable, does sound like the clutch is not disengaging.
Had the same problem on my car, I took the engine out on Friday and found the spigot bearing had siezed to the first motion shaft , had to use an angle grinder to get it off fortunately it hadn't caused any damage . Managed to get a new bearing on Saturday morning and get the car back together. My clutch pedal also felt fine when it had the problem, . Possibly the same fault on yours or maybe a faulty clutch assembly? Doesn't sound like hydraulics.
Was going to say spigot shaft bearing.
will it go into gear with the engine off?
if yes it will be clutch. If not, a gearbox issue....
a quick search found it may be a problem with a 'grub screw' attaching the remote (gearstick) assembly

Why do newbies always look for complicated causes?
This a very common issue on any car that has been laid up for months : the clutch driven plate is stuck to the flywheel.

Have you tried starting it in gear? Make sure you have plenty of room just in case
i did think about this. having had a go yet. do you think there is a chance that might free it up?
If it's a stuck clutch plate it might but if it's a spigot bearing then no.
LT77 on to RV8, I have a vague memory that engines with auto boxes had a steel bush in the crank, you need to remove this and fit a phosphor bronze
or needle bearing in its place or after a while it will weld itself up.
Was the engine originally auto and now backed onto a manual box?

Yes, bush in the back of the crank is the spigot bearing
Any news yet? I doubt very much it's a stuck clutch plate as you managed to get it into gear before it lurched and stopped
