I'm pondering the idea of fitting an auto gearbox (pinto 2.0) and having more of a luxury cruiser than an out and out speed machine. The question is this:

Does the gear shift bolt directly into the gearbox like manuals or are cables used?

Also is there any connections with the carb and exhaust manifold like there is with a mini?

The box is rod operated and there is 1 vacume pipe to the modulator valve.

I think i may have to go manual after all!!

Having an automatic doesn't necessarily mean that you will be going any slower, autos can work well in performance cars, I had one for a while in my TR7V8 3.9 and it was well quick

I really like auto box's and am going to have one on my normal family road car when we change it next year. I was wondering if it would be easier to fit as you won't need to worry about a clutch and i was hoping the shifter would be able to be positioned a bit closer to me as i really don't want to muck about doing a remote gear change.

With no weight the car should as you say be pretty quick. The only thing i won't be able to do is ass around in car parks as much as manual cars lighting the wheels etc..

A tuned Pinto auto should still be pretty quick plus i love the 'pull' you get when you pull away in an auto, foot to the floor and away you go. I guess an auto box may be cheaper as they are less desirable??? It will also affect the price of the car when it gets round to selling it too but hey ho!
