I noticed the Oil pressure Gauge dropped to 0 occassionally, there was plenty of oil, Still on the top mark. It wasnt just after round abouts, it was
happening on the straights after acceleration aswell. If I gave the Steering wheel a wobble the pressure would pick up again.
One possible thought is that I have the wrong dipstick in, maybe a 1300 one, aren't they shorter by an inch.
Can some one measure their 1600 Xflow dipstick from where it enters the block, to the end and also how far from the end the min and max marks are
please?
Any other thought greatly appreciated

Low oil or if you have a modified sump it may need more baffles to stop the oil flowing away from the pickup , needs sorting quick else you'll
run a bearing shell.
If the sump is modified just fill it with the recommended amount and then remark the dipstick.....

Thanks for the reply Steve. My crossflow has the well in the sump at the front and also the dipstick on front nearside, also the oil pickup pipe is at
the front, anyone know what this configuration came of?
Other option i suppose is to measure the amount of oil in the engine, any one know how much oil goes in a flared mexico sump?

Sump isnt modified, as far as i can figure its a mexico sump. It flares out at the bottom. Bummer when undoing and doing up the bolts along the sides !!

the standard 1600/1300 xflow takes 6.5 pints of oil, the big wing sump i presume
will take more ??
i also had this poblem when i went from 1300 xflow to 1600, as i did not get a dipstick tube with the 1600
so all i did was fill my 1600 with the "6.5 pints" and recalibrate my dipstick, i think the level may have been slightley high as at high
revs it blew black smoke out the side
why dont you stick a couple more pints in, at a time to see if it replicates the problem
also could the gauge be playing up, ie blockage/tight bend in the capillery tube (assuming its not electric!!)

Not sure I agree with this Steve... I have at least two different dipsticks and 'tubes' that connect to the block in my xflow collection.... I think the 1600 tubes & sticks were longer to attach onto the head or wherever because as mentioned it is 25.4mm further away!

On the dip stick it'self, mine has 711M 6750 BA
Tube is 260mm
Stick end to tube is 235mm
End of tube to max is 182mm
End of tube to min is 204mm
End of stick to min is 30mm
There is also a collar on the stick this is 214 from end of stick

The front sump is off a mkII Cortina, the dipstick goes through the timing cover rather than the block. This is the setup I have. Not got a pressure
gauge though - might frighten myself!!

Well, have measured up.
Although the dipstick is the same length, the markings are in 10mm lower down. In effect, there is less oil in the sump.
I think the next move is to take the sump of and baffle it, then try to find out how much oil should be in there and remark the dipstick to those
levels.
