Rover V8 Clutch Hose - Help
wilkingj - 22/6/05 at 06:25 AM

What clutch hose is the easiest and cheapest to use on the SD1 Clutch slave cylinder.

I have a Rover SD1 Box with Std Slave cylinder (m12 thread - I think its M12 fine)

The slave, has a M12 thread, and I cant find a clutch hose, apart from the one at Rimmers at very very silly money.

Apart from amking one up in stainless flexi, for about £30.

There must be a cheap clutch hose with a M12 fittin on one end, and a M10 or 3/16 unf on the other, but I cant find one.

could someone point me in the right direction for a economic solution.

The Master Cylinder end can be either m10 or 3/16, as I can convert with a short bit of brake pipe from the chassis to the M/Cylinder..

PS I Got a Land Rover Master series 3 master cylinder from Paddock motors www.paddockspares.com for £19 genuine Girling. Pattern was £9. Not the £75 that Rimmers Wanted!
Only difference is it has a threaded rod end instead of the saddle clamp. Got a threaded saddle clamp from Europaspares for about £3. (Imperial thread one)

Thanks in advance

Geoff,
I had the same problem and also refused to pay Rimmers the £69+p&p+vat (IIRC) for the official hose.

What I did was get a couple of M12 fine into 3/16" (not 1/4" !!) copper pipe couplings. I then made up a pair of short solid pipes, one from master cylinder to chassis and one little stub on the slave cylinder. I then made up a braided flexy hose between the two using the Euroquip (IIRC) hose system which Rally Design can supply.

So, from m/s end to s/c end I used the following:
1. M12 fine to 3/16" pipe male brake union
2. Short length of 3/16" brake pipe
3. M10 fine standard female 3/16" pipe union
4. Raldes euroquip male bulkhead mounted flexy union
5. Length of euroquip braided hose
6. Raldes euroquip female swivel type M10 fine union
7. M10 fine standard male 3/16" pipe union
8. Very short length of copper pipe - as short as possible while still being able to form the flares with your flaring tool basically.
9. M12 fine male 3/16" brake union

Another option with steps 7-9 is to use an adapter from someone like Think Automotive. A male to male M12 fine to M10 fine would be ideal.

I can't remember who I got the M12 fine couplings from but it was either raldes, demon tweeks or perhaps vehicle wiring products. I might be able to find the receipt if you can't find a supplier.

Oh and in case you are wondering, the 3/16" copper pipe doesn't seem to make the clutch sluggish. I was worried that it might due to the higher fluid speed and increased drag within the pipe but for the short pipe lengths involved it doesn't seem to be an issue.

I hope this helps,
Craig.

Mega thanks I have found the M21x1 adaptors at Raldes..
This looks a good way to go. Brown & Gammon at baldock do a hose for the MG RV8 which is M12x1 at one end for £18 or so.
I will be looking to use a cheapo hose and one adaptor if I can get away with it!. I will look some more..
Many thanks... its got me moving again.
This cable has been a pain with no one being able to help. not even our Main Unipart Dept either..

Thanks

No probs, I was in exactly the same boat as you with no 'off the shelf' solutions apparent other than the Rimmers rip-off. I did my braking systems with the euroquip stuff and I had some spare braided hose left over at the end anyway so it didn't cost much. In fact really it only cost a few quid for the flexy couplings at each end and a few pence for the other fittings.

I ran the solid pipe quite far down the bulkhead (to around 5 inches above the chassis base rails) and then riveted a small bracket onto the bulkhead to take the coupling. My braided hose runs along the offside "G" tube with rubber lined P-clips and then doubles back on itself into the slave cylinder. Quite a neat solution I think and much cheaper than Rimmers...

All the best,
Craig.
