Richard Y - 30/6/05 at 09:32 AM

Any one know any build guides from those fitting zetec lumps into 7 style cars i can have a gander at

i can get umm cheap and local i dont wanna completly rule out dropping a zetec lump in there as appossed to an old 2.0 pinto theres gunna be definate benifits

anyone know from experiance if its much harder with regards to the loom fitting ? or any other problems incured going for an injection and ecu based engine in particular the 2.0 zetec ?

It's not so much an issue of difficulty as increased cost
My installation will end up using the following 'extra' parts, (these are just the major items)

1800 flywheel
1800 clutch
Modified release bearing
Escort water pump
After market Throttle bodies
After market ECU
New inlet manifold
Exhast manifold
Escort sump

I hope to get the engine sorted for about £2000

I'd say I could repeat my engine install for less than £1200 including buying the engine.

A reasonable budget would probably include:

Engine £50-£400
1.8 lightened Flywheel+Clutch+spigot bearing £250
TBs+Inlet Manifold, Filters etc £350
ECU+Wiring £250-£600 (Megasquirt vs Emerald etc)
Exhaust £200
Misc £150 - pipes, fuel pumps, etc

Note that this will imply a good deal of fabication on behalf of the builder.

How do you manage the throttle bodies etc for £350?

Im using a 1.8 zetec. Its cost me not much at all so far really.

Engine 60 quid
130 cams 20 quid
Bike carbs 8 quid
Basic ign 30 quid

bits i need
exhaust 350 approx which u will need for any engine.
Escort sump 20 or chopped one 100 quid.

IMO the worst bit is the inlet manifold.

Don't forget the water rail £158 and starter motor £?

I've just bought a 2l black top and it'll probably cost £1500 - £2000

Just a thought

Mark

lol i didnt know it was so much!!!!! puts it well in perspective that does the old pintos looking better lol

so how much do you have to change ? cant you run std water pumps and std inginition and std inlet manifold and an air filter ?

Markp - 30/6/05 at 10:26 PM

although a lot of people say you have to change the water pump, and this might be the case on the silver top, on the black top zetec you can run the standard pump with no effect caused. (wait for someone to say otherwise )

As regard to the standard inlet manifold.......Have you seen the size of it??? if anyone can fit it in then it would be a great sight to see.

Other opinions welcome

cheers Mark

Why does the water pump get changed. I'm worried now, I've done 1,500 miles with the zetec pump no problems, 2.0l zetec silver top.

I've got the lightened flywheel from tiger this allows you to use the pinto clutch, its a bit cheaper.

Use the Fiesta/Escort inlet manifold with the 2.0 throttle body on it, or a set of GSXR throttle bodies (£75-ish off ebay), or a pair of 40's of course (£200-ish)

Easiest way to do the electronics is with an Escort ESC2 unit (£10 from a scrapper) but obviously this only works on carbs. Megasquirt ECU you are looking at £150 by the time you've done it all.

Other than that it's all Escort bits from the scrap yard - hardy difficult to come by! really don't get why people think the Zetec will cost money. It will be more than a Pinto, but I would expect a £500 budget for the engine and the bits to make it work would give a reasonable package.

It depends on what car the engine came from! The Escort engines have the correct water pump, the Mondeo ones have a water pump that turns in the opposite direction, and keeping the mondeo belt drive setup is impractical on a Locost. So a man at the pub told me...

Water Rail is not a must-have

Starter - 1.8 CVH Sierra. Mine was a fiver

Waterpump on 2.0 silvertop is run off the back of the auxiliary belt. If you're running in this configuration then you're fine.

If you want to run it off the ribbed side then you need the impellor / pump from a 1.8.

Basically if the pump has a smooth pulley then it needs to be run off the back of the belt. If it's ribbed then it's run off the ribber side.

GSXR750 THrottlebodes £100
DCOE Manifold £150
Fuel Rail £60
Injectors £5
Trumpets £35
Filters £50

OK.. £400

Can be done for less if you don't change the spacing or the injectors and can get a custom manifold cheaply (or make it yourself)
