Head skim to raise compression?
Monkeybasher - 9/7/05 at 02:52 PM

Hi,

I have got my 2.0l zetec head off, the car runs on webers. I am going to get the head skimmed before I put the new gasket on, should I get a little more taken off and raise the compression. How much should be taken off?

Any thoughts welcome

Steve

Don't know with the Zetec lump but your local machine shop/ engine reconditioners may have the relavant information as to what is the maximum amount heads can be shimmed before you run into clearance problems. Would have thought that clearances are a little tight on a Zetec before skimming ! HTH Rusty

head work ? high lift cams? high comp pistons ? custom ecu and loom thers loads more you can do than skim it id think of it as something that should only be down to create flatness instead of gaining bhp, if you do more to the lump later it could create problems/ if your head gasket goes later it could create problems

check out zetec turbos.com 2.1L zetec turboed fiestas that can do 179 mph

Working on a C16XE 1.6 16V Vauxhall engine.

I was advised to get 60thou deeper pockets put in the pistons for valve clearance, and to then get 25thou taken off the head to make up for the deeper recesses in the pistons, and to increase the compression.

Be aware that increased compression could cause pinking and may need ignition changes to suit.

We make a spacer for the chaps who turn them into turbo'd units.

2mm spacer takes them down to 8.2-1 ( ish)

so work it backwards.

I have had to have a skim as my engine was cooked ( £120)

I have left the space plate out ( 1mm) and have no problem with valve clearance.
