Early days of thinking of turbo charging 2.0l zetec
Monkeybasher - 27/7/05 at 11:55 AM

Just recently found a few sites on turbo charging the zetec, I'm sure you all are aware of. anyway this one http://www.zetec-turbo.co.uk/ uses cosworth management and involves machining flywheels, cams etc. Is it possible to use a different management ie emerald, gems, etc and not have to do this machining. ie use the 1.8 lightened flywheel and the existing cam marking lobes. If so are there maps already.
I was hoping you could use the existing flywheel sensor, cam sensor, water temp sensor and add a map sensor and that would be it, or am I way off.

What inlet manifold would you use as the 1.8 is different and will it fit under the bonnet of a locost.

I found this site for an exhaust manifold http://www.chevroletls1.com/zetecturbo.html, to save drilling the head. although it adds to the cost somewhat.

Basically I would like to do the work with as little modding to the engine as possible, cause I'm lazy.

Any help guys much appreciated.

Cheers

Steve

send a u2u to garage19 on here as this is what he's up to for his car

Megasquirt and spark ?

theres a chap at dennis vesseys with a turbo zetec westfield , not sure on engine specs , but he uses MBE .

That would be Austen. Makes 360 bhp and 360ftlb torque!

No - not 100% way off.

If and when I've got some cash, I'd consider it for my car.

For an exhaust manifold, why not just use an Focus RS manifold? Would bolt straight up.

For inlet manifold, I'm already using individual TBs so would just need to fabricate an airbox to take the pressure - and probably fit a second set of injectors to the inlet manifold.

For compression, the easiest way is to get a spacer plate but I'm always dubious of the reliability when using these.

another way of getting the compression down is bore the engine out to 88mm and fit some vauxhall xe pistons. i don't know all the details but have heard of it done, search the web for more info...

Right,

Steve:
The easiest exhaust manifold to use is the Escort RS turbo one. You have to drill and re-tap the head but the ports are spot on. Good for 350bhp, and should cost you less than £20 off ebay. A focus RS manifold will cost you a bomb.

Skip the de comp plates and speak to Ferriday engineering who will increase the CC of your combustion chambers with a nice CNC mill for £250ish.

Bear in mind that if you want to run anything more than 10ish psi you WILL need forged pistons.

Ned:

The pistons people use are the early forged XE ones or the later LET ones. Both 86mm. You might be able to get oversized ones but they are not ideal as you will increase your CR as you increase your displacment.

I have gone with 86 mm XE pistons, a CR of 8.1:1 and an Escort RS Turbo manifold.

Currently on the bench on the bench is another ZT i am building with a friend. Will have a CR of 7.6ish, forged pistons, H beam rods, a GT30 turbo and 400+bhp. The stock cranks have already been proved at this level.

Cheers Guys,

So what power could you safely run with the XE pistons?

What engine management, inlet manifold and sensors are needed, does the inlet manifold have to be a custom jobby?

Did you machine the flywheel or cams for sensor pickup?

Sorry to list questions, I am getting extremely interested as it looks like there should be good power gains for not massive amounts of money nice little project with my spare engine

oops got mixed up with the xe piston sizes as I'm running 2mm oversize on my engine

What about trying the ZVH conversion?

ie. turbo escort CVH cylinder head and management bolted onto a zetec block.

There's a couple of sites around that give some good info.

Here's one I read before:

Scooby has a zetec turbo westfield too. It's completely bonkers! There should be lots of info on the Westfield forums

what about just having a turbo engine in the first place !
