Ok i'm at the point where i need to run the cooling pipes on my car but it's different to my old car and i have no idea where everything
should go.
Spec:
1978 Pinto
Polo Rad
Astra Header tank (i think)
Here are pics of the bits. I was told i need to 'T' somewhere but not sure where.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This is the inlet on the carb manifold

Youve missed one out I think. On your pic that you can see the alternator, where the alt bracket secures the thermostat (silver thing at top of pic) to the left of the bolt head and alt bracket there is another water connection. Ive blanked this off on mine.
Jos: Cheers i'll block that one off.
ditchlewis: Great thanks. I was told to blank off the overflow on the rad? Is this right/wrong?
Personally I havent fitted an expansion tank and have plumbed mine as follows
Top of rad connected to top of block (exactly as in your first pic)
Bottom of rad connects to bottom of block. Discharge from this goes under the exhaust headers over bell housing and forwards to carb connection. Job
done.
Ive seen the expansion vessel connected in to this line as well using a t piece, with the top hose connector on the ex ves blanked off.
I have the same components and have it set-up thus
Top hose as per your pic 1.
Expansion tank (D) to Water Pump (B) with a "T" in the middle of the hose to the inlet manifold (E)
Expansion Tank (C) to small thermostat outlet (un-labeled)
Bottom hose between water pump and bottom of rad.
Seems to work OK and holds good temp when idling for long periods.
The Astra expansion tank does seem to hiss a lot, but then it may do in an Astra and you just don't notice it.
How long til' your on the road then Andy?
Cheers
Nick
Opps
missed that one. i think it is for bleading the system, and mine is blocked off to!!!!
sorry
ditch
ps i fitted the over flow and it seems to work, but not sure if it is necessary.
PPS
i fitted the expansion tank because there was not cap in the tp of the rad, therefore no way to fill the system. on an old car (cortina etc) the rad
had a cap to fill the system with. modern cars have an expansion tank. the Polo rad would appear form the photos not to have a cap on the rad, there
fore the expansiontank may be require only to provide you a method of filling the system.

i was trying to remember whos pic I found extreemly useful and it was yours nick, thank you
I ran the air bleed one on the thermostat housing, just above the B in your picture, to the equivalent of the C on your header tank, then B to the E on the manifold with a 'T' made from plumbing fittings to the D bottom of the header. A is the bottom hose. The Polo rad doesn't have an overflow does it?

Pat...
Thanks guys, i'll measure up for the piping later and see what i can get.
Nick: I really want to get on the road before April as i'm away in Florida for most of April. I have 2 months so i'm getting me skates on!!
Also you will need the car on the road for stoneleigh
Get yourself a nice sleeping bag
I'll be over tomorow to help with the plumbing

Jos,
I've since added the pipe in red, which returns from the water pump to the expansion tank.
When cold, the water flows back into the tank through this pipe, but once the thermostat opens, the flow stops.

PS - I am no expert and have followed the advice of others on here with similar set-ups Image deleted by owner
There seems to be an infinite variety of ways to do this!
Mine's got an Astra tank but is different too!
Also a 32/36 carb.
Pump to bottom of rad.
Thermostat to top of rad.
Blank off thermostat small connector.
Manifold (water out!) up to choke.
Choke to top of Astra tank
Bottom of Astra tank to pump small inlet.
Hope that helps!
Cheers,
James
Mines above,works fine.
keep it simple
I like simple.... cos simple is what i is!

Right oh James. I'm sure with Mr Bob's help tomorrow I'll get it near right if nowt else!
The bit I found most annoying about the cooling system was trying to route the bottom hose from the water pump to the rad, without fouling the
alternator belt and steering column/rack. I've done it 3 times and I'm still not happy with it.
How have you lot done it?

sounds better than my current set-up which consists of a reducing flexi hose from the pump, folded/kinked to clear the alternator belt, then a bit of
stainless tube parallel to the rad followed by a 90 deg bend onto the rad bottom outlet.
It works OK, just looks untidy
I made my bottom hose as james said with a ali piece in the straight run from the bottom of the rad to join the elbow.
Conrodkid used a BMW 3 series bottom hose which he said was perfect for the job, might be worth asking him the model or opart number if he has it.

I'm not sure his PC's working as he was asking about new hard drives on Sunday???? I may be wrong.
Donut, why didn't you be a real man and ask Bob for help in the first place, instead of going to the pretence of asking a question on here knowing
Bob would feel guilty and offer to help!
On the other hand this could be Bobs ploy to escape to the pub with Donut and not having to tell mrs Bob.
Yours, not conned by you two, Dean.
PS: It was the way Bob offered rather too quickly that gave it away! You two dont fool me!!
Damn we have been rumbled!!
I've been down the pub, new barmaid donuts pipes/her pipes........no contest
I'll be round in 10 hrs anyway
here is my mess
